For all of what they offer they are seemingly priced to take the performance market by storm, however I'd reserve final judgment until more results are known and Dfi, Abit, ect enter the fora.

-ATI's upcoming GPUs, will they offer amazing performance(/dollar)? If so, will CF tech work well on the P45 which offers x8 x8 PCI-E 2.0 config
I was probably going X48 to get the two x16 PCI slots. I'm thinking about one Radeon 4870 now, and adding another in Crossfire mode next year. The P45s only do two cards at x8 according to Wikipedia, right? Two x16 would be better than two x8s, yes? Am I thinking straight on this, or is there a compelling reason to go P45 over X48?

I won't be doing RAID, I'm just going to drop a Velicoraptor in as the C: drive and then stuff a bunch of 250GB PATA drives I have lying around as my "slow" storage.

I think timing your upgrade/new build within ATI's GPU release(4870 GDDR5 for $329 July) and Intel's Q3 price cuts might be the best approach in terms of performance and out of pocket cost... I mean if I bought a Q9550 now for $500+ only to see it drop to $300+ in a single months time frame I'd be a little and . Since historically Intel Q3 price cuts have been around late July it's worth the small wait(IMHO).
You answered the exact question I asked a few hours ago in this thread! I definitely think I can wait through July, since I doubt that the Radeon 4870s will be too easy to get my hands on until mid-July anyway.

You are correct,

x48 = x16 x16
p45 = x8 x8

The real question now becomes is there any significant impact? Both are PCI-E 2.0 so each lane is capable of bidirectional 500MB/s, which is doubled since the previous PCI-E 1.1 standard(250MB/s). The 8800GTX was rumored(proven?) to not even come close to fully saturating all x16 lanes and that was on PCI-E 1.1(theoretically equivalent to x8 PCI-E 2.0 lanes). So it's tough to say, I'm hoping that we will see some benches compare/contrast P45 vs X48 chipsets with CF 3870s, CFX 3870x2s and CF 4850s...

Right now the only definitive compelling reasons to chose p45 over x48 are as follows:

-Cheaper
-65nm NB should run cooler and potentially OC better (vice 90nm on X48)

Other than that only time will tell, I've found these results very compelling and I'm anxious to see what 45nm quads + P45 are capable of.
