Replacing my motherboard...first timer

Thread Starter
I just got a new Gigabyte MOBO. I have never swapped one before. I have Vista only on my hard drive. No disc. At the time it was just easier to buy an hp instead of build my own. How is this going to work? Do I need the vista disc just to boot from? Do i need to reinstall...if so I can do that from my recovery partition.

If someone could please tell me my options. Thanks in advance!!

Your OEM Vista license isn't going to activate on your new motherboard, and while it is technically possible, talking about circumventing that is considered piracy talk on these forums, and will be "dealt with" as such.

That being said, your option is to buy another Vista license, be it OEM or retail. The OEM license is limited to one motherboard, but costs less. The retail version can be transferred, but is more expensive. Pick one.

Ok thanks, I did not know it was one license per mobo. Why should I have to pay for a new license if my original board failed? Thats not right.

Yep... but sadly OEM licences die with the 1st motherboard they are installed on

I thought that your can replace the motherboard and re activate windows If the old motherboard is dead nad is replaced with a new on. This is what we do at work all the time, with Dells, Acers, HP, etc. If a critical piece of hardware [meaning motherboard only really] dies, Microsoft cannot say "Bad luck, it died - come buy from me again now please"

From my experience, the license is transferable to a modified version of the original system, if the original system is daed

Install system with new parts
Find/downlaod a vista disk image
Re-install windows with original key
Activate Windows [might be able to do it online - if not click activate over phone , type your key in after the prompts, then it will probably ask "Are you reinstalling on pc" then another question i cannot remember [i just press 1 then 1 to say yes to these at work - don't listen to them - have heard it to many times] and it will give you the activation code
Copy all your documents from the folder on your C: drive called: Windows.old/Users/xxxxx/Documents [or music or whatever else]
And your done
