so what ATI card would you pick out of all these for an entry level machine?

Um, lots of cards lol.

The Asus HD3450. It has the added benefit of being fanless, so no noise to bother them

My vote is still for the hard disk Its the only thing bottlenecking the loading times.

what i have is:

e1200 - $50.00 OR e2180 - $79.99
p35-ds3l - $79.99
mushkin 2x1gb - $43.99
video card - ~$50

that pretty much puts me at the $250 mark not including shipping and taxes. she already has a 80gb 7200rpm drive.

Sure. Like I said, it doesn't really matter which one you pick because they aren't going to use any of its capability lol.

Ok ok ill give you a straight answer Yes the 8400gs will give good enough performance for them IF they ever decide they want to try a video game. Nothing impressive though.

so i remembered that i had a 6600gt lying around somewhere. would that be on par with a cheapo card?

here is the shopping list so far:

gigabyte DS3L - 79.99
Transcend 2x1gb ddr800 - 39.49
