Hp pavilion dv5000 problem...Help!

A friend of mine has one of these. When I try to turn it on, all the lights come, but the screen does not. I can not turn it off by the power button, I have to take out the battery. When it is on, it feels like it is running. I'm thinking it is the motherboard or monitor inverter. Which I will replace if that is the issue. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks!

monitor inverters can't be that expensive, try it! I fixed a 17" LCD monitor for someone with a $20 inverter

from what you described that would be my first guess.

Ok i found out what the problem is. The Lithium battery in the mobo will not stay in. Looks like the clip is broke that holds it into place. Could I rig it with electrical tape or something to keep it in? I held it in with my finger and the computer booted up just fine.
