Help with overclocking phenom 9500

Thread Starter
Sorry if this is the wrong place for this but im new to these forums and am in need of help. I have the AMD overdrive utility and when i go into the autoclock section theres no button to press its all greyed out. In advanced mode to when i increase the multiplier on one of the cores and apply it seems to reset after a couple of seconds. If you need me to post my system specs tell me how to find them and il put them up here. Any help is much appreciated.

post your system specs by hitting Quick Links -> User Control Panel..

And try going into your BIOS and reading this guide: http://www.overclock.net/amd-general...ocket-am2.html

Im no pro at overclocking, but i do know that overclocking via software is a no no.

I do everything through bios, and at small increments, while testing for stability. by stable, i mean you can do intensive tasks and not have it restart on you, for hours on end.

CPU clock speed = bus speed x multiplier

you up the bus speed, you up the overall clock speed. to gain stability you may need to up the voltage as well.

im a noob when it comes to oc, i have done it before wich i did in bios on my old pc but when i go into bios on my new computer theres no settings that have to do with the cpu. il get my system specs down in a second here, but i did buy this from Best Buy its an Acer so maybe they disable that option.

EDIT: Where do i find out what kind of motherboard it is?

This is my problem i think, my mobo is RS690/RS690M

AMD motherboard requirements:

RS740 motherboard

RS780 motherboard

RD790 motherboard

Does this just mean that AMD overdrive wont work? can i still oc some other way?

Well AMD put out the Overdrive to help people that dont know OC, the auto i have heard doesnt work well...its like leaving it at factory settings....go back and go to the novice level...til you know what you are doing the go advanced then try in the bios.

Did you BUILD or BUY your computer?

If it's a typical pre-built, you cannot overclock it properly.

I think your machine is an OEM. Thats why those settings are disabled. Through that board away and put a new board built upon AMD 790fx chip set.
Puting a decent new board is ur only option if u want to overclock.

No it's not. There's a program called "clockgen" that worked fine to overclock my Acer M1100. CPU-cool can do it too. For clockgen, the clock generator chip is close enough to an ICS 951462 to use the same commands, so it works fine. I have my 2.0Ghz 4000+ up to 2.5Ghz now with no issues, and I"m sure I could higher if it weren't for the stock Acer CPU fan. My system is running at 78.8F right now, but the case fan sounds like a jet engine. CPU-cool's fan control doesn't seem to be able to detect the CPU fan's RPM, so I was out hunting for fan control software - that's why I found this post actually. I was hoping there was a simple fix to implement what CPU-cool says it can do, which is to vary the fan RPM based on temperature.
