HDMI looks like Composite HD3850

Thread Starter
I've had a 3850 for a few months now and haven't messed with the HDMI until now.. ATM it sucks ...

I've looked for information about poor quality with ati HDMI, but haven't found anything..

Here are my issues..

1. Composite (tv out) like quality..
2. Poor color quality
3. Image is bigger than my screen and runs off about 2" from all sides
4. No audio (all latest drivers installed for HDMI)

The audio really doesn't bother me so much, its the picture and color quality that gets to me..

Anyone else have an issue like this? Does it matter what output on the card I use? So far I've tried every setting CCC has to offer and every CCC version that this card supports..

Any help would be great

Thanks
Muncher

Not a bad suggestion.. Being and A/V tech. I know that the cheap $15 HDMI cables provide every bit as good of a picture as the $$$$$ ones do.. I've tried other cables, its not the cable..

Its a bedroom tv, a 32" Westinghouse 1080i (1366x768@60).. My cable box has HDMI as well and looks great on this tv.. Using the same cable even, my ati card looks much much worse..

IDK, just thought there maybe some out there who have had like problems with theirs.. This very well could just be an issue with the card I guess.. I'll go pick one up later today and see if a new one acts the same..

Might be the drivers. I'm using HDMI on my 32" Samsung and with 8.5 it wouldn't put it to the full tv for some reason, leaving like a half an inch of black everywhere @ 1360x768, went back to 8.4 and it was fine again. Quality I didn't compare though.

Does the 3850 have an HDMI port or are you using the DVI to HDMI converter from ATI?

If your TV has another HDMI port, try plugging the cable into that.

Also, refer to your TV's manual for connecting computer HDMI.

Tried the other HDMI's on the Tv, and the manual says nothing of PC with HDMI..

I'm using the DVI>HDMI convertor.. I guess it could have a problem, I'll dig up another one I have and try that first..

The only drivers for this series that I haven't tried yet are from the CD-rom.. IDK what ccc version that is, but I guess I should try them as well.. I don't think it's a driver issue tho, as I've tried v8.1 on up..

Another issue is that my color seems to change slightly everytime I restart or power on (HDMI and DVI).. I'm really thinking the card may be the problem.. Right now (with DVI) OCN is blue, white, and a strange shade of a pinkesh purple for the message boxes.. My other PC's don't show this pink/purple color..

I'm off to Fry's to pick up a card to test with.. I'll post my results..

Thanks guys..

the problem shoudn't be the DVI to HDMI conversion, since both are purely digital. Unless the converter is borked!

also make sure your desktop resolution matches the TV's native res

otherwise i guess it could be the card itself / drivers.

Colors shouldn't change, but I know I had to adjust in CCC to get my color right on screen, no more so than I have to for inputs from any other source though. As for quality, what are you comparing the quality of? Video? If so, are the source contents of the same quality? I think one common misconception is that your PC will look like HD content on the desktop, and with everything it does, and this is simply just not the case.

I run DVI-D - HDMI on x1950 pro , HD 3850, HD3870, and they all work great
I have not experianced any of the issues you have but I have a great BELKIN
HDMI cable and DVI-D cable , and a 1080p native Westy 42" the problem may
be in the fact that HDMI supports 1080p through the port , have you tried a VGA
connector ? or pure DVI ,your composite should work right because it supports 1080i
and 720p ,also I have heard of monitors not supporting GPU HDMI signal on some ports .

Hope you get this fixed .
