SLI 9600GT 1GB with another 1GB or 512MB? - Page 2

I don't think you understand everything about SLI, it's not all everything is X2, if you have 2 cards in SLI with 512mb VRAM, you have only 512mb VRAM not 1gig. They are working together in parallel, not adding to each other.

Disregard everything Palit_Guy said. Anything over 512 is a complete and utter waste of money. You're limited by the 256 bit bus.

palit guy not making too much sense. having 1GB vram is not by any means 'future-proofing'. by the end of one or two years a better performing, cheaper, card will be out anyways. so buy for what you need now. a 1GB 8600GT didnt beat a 512MB 9600GT and a 1GB 9600GT wont beat whatever card comes out to replace it.

but for the matter at hand i think selling the 1gb and getting two 512MBs is a good idea.

i thought you could sli a 1gb and a 512... the other card would just default to 512... i know u can sli a 640 and a 320 GTS.

guys you can SLI 2 cards with different memory capacities aslong as the cores are identical.

SLI defaults to the lowest common denominating factors between the cards.

Yes, that's how it's supposed to work. Just doesn't always work out quite like that.

Before saying I don't know what I'm talking about, I would suggest checking my facts first. Run AoC and watch what happens to your frame rate as you extend the draw distance of your high res textures.

I dislike the term future proof because many people jump to the conclusion that it means your card will perform at the same level as future cards. Perhaps a better word would be future tolerant.

The 1GB card currently outperforms the 512MB version in AoC in this circumstance. If this isn't important to you, that's fine, go with the 512MB.

I spend a fair amount of time interacting with game developers and they are definitely liking the larger memory space. The only problem is that not that many cards feature it so it will take a while before things get very optimized for it.

Try to remember that not everyone buys a new card every year or even every two. So it is of interest to them to be able to extend the usefulness of their card a bit. The extra 512MB of RAM certainly won't knock you over but if you plan on keeping your card for a while, it's not a bad idea.

Our price on the 8800GT 1GB card at Newegg is actually lower than our 512MB card right now.

In fear of getting another infraction I am going to bite my tongue.

THAT is how it works, not "an", 'if", "when", or "quite like that". Different combinations of memory DO work. IF it DOESN'T then another card with the same amount of ram WILL NOT either.

Sorry man, I'm not trying to get you so wound up you get in trouble. It's just a conversation.

I also manage the tech support department and I have seen this issue come up a couple times. When we replaced the 512 with a 1GB and vice versa the problem went away. It is possible that two people with two different machines both had a bad card or some other non-related issue. Changing the card solved the problem both times and I haven't ever delved into it any further.

So to be on the safe side, I don't recommend it. That doesn't make me right.
