so, if that holds true, technically since everyone is telling me to sell my 1gb card and get the 512mb card, which will be better, if your statement is correct then if i SLI my 1gb with 512mb, and im only using 512mb from each card, then i dont need to get rid of my 1gb card and i can leave it, as long as i SLI it with another 512mb card, they will both be running using 512mb and i should be doing ok with SLI, correct?

Problem is, the performance might be worse if you use a 1gb card and a 512mb card.

The only reason that it could happen is if the 1GB model has slower RAM.

In SLI the cards clocks are matched, to the slowest card. So if your 1GB is 600/800 and the 512MB you buy is 650/900, both cards will run at 600/800 and as 512MB.

Now really, I don't think you should go with SLI. You'd be better off selling the card you have and buying a used 8800GTX, or wait a few weeks for the GT200 and HD48 series.

if he already has the motherboard he might as well. besides 9600GT SLI is better than a 8800GTX.

The way video card memory works is determined by the mbits of the processor. If the processor is 256bits it can only access 512mbs of ram. Thats why Only the Dual core graphics cards can fully utilize 1gb of ram because they are running 2 256bit processors. SO if you SLI 2 9600gts with 1gb of ram you will then be able to access the 1gb of ram on one card. Memory does'nt stack when sli'ing, it only uses the memory from one card. So Sli'ing 2 9600gt's is a cheap way to get amazing performance. Because 2 9600gt 512's can out perform a 9800 gtx on average by about 10-15%. Which is pretty big deal. When you add an extra 512 of memory to the mix its gonna beat it by even more. Making 2 9600gts 1gb a great long term investment, alowing you to get close to 9800gx2 performance for about 200$ less...
