Cable & Wireless, NTL and Virgin Media (all the same cable connection over the years) have never even reduced my service. I currently pay for 20mbps and get about 22mbps.

When I was with Demon elsewhere, I paid for 8mbps, received about 2mbps (BT on the same line limited me to 1mbps because they thought I couldn't get any better) and got reduced to 56kbps for 30 days because I downloaded over 30GB in a month. I find that unless you live right next to the exchange, any ADSL will be pretty bad.

If you have an existing cable socket, I highly recommend Virgin Media's 10mbps line to anyone. It's cheap, (has no real restrictions unless you torrent 24/7 and max your upload and download) and you generally get around the speed you pay for, if not higher. Even the customer service has changed from the worst I have ever used (NTHell) to the best in the last few months.

Though it probably sounds like I do, I don't work for Virgin Media. All of this is just out of hatred for all of the ADSL providers that I have used
Virgin used to be good but now they are over-subscribed. They throttle the network a lot and quite often the customer gets poor download speeds and high latency.

Have a read through the comments on this rating page.

I was with them in both Leeds and Surrey and have not had anything below 20mbps on either. 768kbps upstream is pretty low for 20mbps just to request the packets, send out SYNs and ACKs etc, but (without caching) I can connect to the uk mirror service over HTTP at 21mbps in Leeds (for £25/mo) and 22mbps in Surrey (for £37/mo because this connection is many years old). These transfers were done throughout the day and night.

Edit: I did have to upgrade my TJ cable modem when I switched to 20mbps when it came out but this is to be expected as I got that modem when switching from their free dialup to their cable which was only around 128kbps at the time.

I tend to find that comments posted online are not representative as people don't usually bother posting them unless they have something to complain about, so all I am going by is my own personal experience, which has been far better than any other ISP I have used, and I have used a lot.

Thats fair enough. However my friend was on Virgin and it was nothing but trouble for him.

We both moved to Be at roughly the same time andI sync at 24mb, download at 2.5mb/s, upload at 140kb/s and pay £18.

I will agree. Virgin were atrocious for us too. Never got the speeds as advertised. Plus their DNS servers were always down. Traffic shaping was pretty bad too, only got 600kbps at peak times. (This was in Swindon). Supposed to be 8meg. Engineer would not check the line.

Tiscali I must admit are actually pretty good where I live, I get a steady 2.5mbps regardless of time of day, but the contention rates are low in my area. I also live out in the sticks and BT only reckoned I would get 1.9mbps.

No doubt though, the best ADSL is BE's ADSL2+ service. I just can't afford that .

ghell, I guess you were just lucky .

My friend is on Tiscali 2mb in a village and his internet is pretty good. It's Tiscali's 8mb service that has the most issues and complaints.

Edit:

I recommend Be/o2 all they way

I am on Tiscalis 8mb Service.

Heres my download speed -

And my speedtest result-

Saying that, I do have a mate in Swindon, who only gets 200kbps at peak times with tiscali, and he is on their 8mb package . So it really does depend on the contention rates where you live.
