I'm pretty sure you don't even know what you're talking about...

DX9 isn't capable of running Very High, plain and simple. It wasn't Crytek (not EA, by the way) who chose to lock that stuff out, they just chose to label "DirectX 10" as "Very High".

so why did they "lock that stuff out" if it could be used in xp. i understand that its not 100% dx10 equivalent but its still better than "high" settings, so why not allow xp users to have the best graphics experience that can be had on xp.

Probably because Crytek and EA were both paid by Microsoft to give Crysis some Vista/DX10 only features. That or Crytek wanted to be one of the first games with Vista only DX10 features. I am sure that all of the DX10 features are possible on XP as it has already been proven to be possible with the very high settings configs.

All this talk of DX10 and Crysis has me wondering, when i play it on XP, ofc it runs in dx9 mode. I cant help but notice, even when I play on Vista, all set to low for example, its still running DX10, and i notice differences in the way water falls, or runs off my face. There is more than just Very High is DX10 I belive.

If you use the Very High cfg mod for XP, the only thing you will not get is 3D waves, also the vegetation looks less "dense" and the colour pallet is slightly different.

Using the Very High mod for XP does NOT use ANY DX10 effects as this is impossible. Crytek took the best DX9 settings, added a couple of DX10 effects a this became the "Very High" settings, the reason they did this is probably so that they could make the DX10 mode seem more substantial so they wouldn't get accused of just tacking on DX10 support like some other games did at the time of release. It's also likely that Nvidia wanted this to happen too because by making DX10 look a lot better than DX9 they would encourage 7 series owners to upgrade, M$ also had a vested interest in makling DX10 seem better than it really is in order to shift more copies of Vista to gamers (which was proving difficult at the time as Vista was performing slower than XP).

I hope that answers your question, if you would like further information on the topic of DX10 features in Crysis there are some very knowledgable people at this Crysis forum www.incrysis.com

The hack doesn't employ all of the visual effects for DX10. There is quite a large difference in image quality between the two.

because it cant be done in XP ffs, havent you been listening to anyone in this thread? the "very high hack" for Crysis in XP isnt even close to the 99% you claim. for the settings to say Very High and the game to actually run VERY HIGH, then you NEED DX10, enough said.

DX9 will attempt to run the very high settings with the hack, but DX9 doesnt have the coding to do it properly, thus proven that the very high hack is at least 50% bs.

and to answer your initial question, Crytek did it because they wanted users who were capable of running the Very High settings to actually get DX10 features to their full potential, why would they bother trying to code more and more so that XP users can get anywhere close to running DX10 shaders n stuff..
