So I would like a fast external hard drive to run ubuntu on and/or back up my computer; I really don't need anymore than 250 GB. Thanks for all the help.

I've been looking through newegg, though there aren't (or don't seem to be any) reliable 1394 external hard drives, should I just get a western digital w/ USB?

if you want a good external hdd, you should just buy an enclosure and put in a laptop hdd or desktop hdd. i recommend using a laptop hdd because its slimmer and usb 2.0 provides enough power to run the hdd. while desktop hdd you need an ac cable to power it.

Where can I find an enclosure, I'm guessing I could use 1394 for it as well. Thanks.

most enclosures now support esata so its better to use esata over USB or firewire. you can probably grab an enclosure at newegg.

esata>firewire>usb.

if you dont have esata for your pc just use firewire

EDIT: i own a vantec nexstar and its pretty good. the new vantec ez-swap came out so you might want to purchase the ez-swap. also make sure that you get a sata 2.5 hdd and an enclosure that is sata internal.

my last usb only enclosure just died, I'm going for an e-sata capable enclosure, like $59 bucks, it'll do both esata and usb for sata and ide. (If you use ide, you can only use the usb connection.)

I am thinking about getting:
Western Digital: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136221
Macally: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817347013

If you know of any problems with any of these or any better options please let me know, unfortunately I don't have an eSATA port so I'm going with firewire. Thanks Guys.

this is probably a better HDD. its sata2 and its -$10 and its 320GB. eventhough firewire cant reach the speed of sata2 its still good to get this for the future.
