The A900 isn't even close to "top of the line", there are at least four other pairs of production headphones Audio Technica makes that are better than it (AD900, W1000, AD2000, W5000, I'm probably still missing something else).

I would get the A700 before the A900, price/performance considered. I auditioned both of them at my local guitar center with my portable setup. The A900 had a terribly recessed upper-mid, it just killed the sound for me. They might be good for movies and games, but I think the D2000 out does the A900 in pretty much every aspect except for isolation. The A700 felt like the A900 with slightly less resolution, which un-amped you probably won't notice a difference. I feel that the A700 is a much better bang for the buck.

OK, ya. Top of the line for that series is what I should have said. They have some cans up in the $1,000+ range, though.

The 4 Audio Technica models that Trigger listed are all below $700.

The very best from Audio Technica was the L3000. It has been discontinued for quite some time now and when one pops up for sale it fetches $2-3,000 (maybe more).
