how can it be the best game ever if it requires a third party mod to make it even look descent? the original HL2 looked pretty horrible plain textures no bump mapping at all, none noticable anyway. but i never liked HL series that much. i will say the FF mod is breathtaking though.

5. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

4. Crysis.

1. Half Life 2
Oblivion after Crysis?. you've gotta be kidding.

Dunno if i'd consider WOW in the list either - i'm not keen on it because everyone else is for all the wrong reasons.

I watched a program about addiction. and a small segment of it was about WOW. How players get a "high" out of completing a quest. eventually caring what the quest is actually about vanished into thin air..

I suspect my friend(s) to suffer with a similar "addiction". they'd be confused when i'd be reading a quest instead of just doing it though Quest Helper or Lightheaded. to me, it makes playing the game completely pointless. you could say its like being given a medal for no reason. making the medal itself have no value whatsoever. this is why i rarely play WOW.

Yeah,

You really have to play through the entire story of Half Life 2 before you make your decision about how high it ranks on the "best game ever scale"

With that said, I'm proud to say that I have done just that numerous times.

Half life 2 > Everything

Everybody that doesn't recognize Starcraft as the best game ever is wrong. No game in history has had the staying power of Starcraft. And modern RTSs don't have much going on (that's worth anything, anyway) that Starcraft didn't have first. After 10 years, it's still the game to beat.

Market dominance != "greatest"...WoW is largely derivative of every MMO that came before it, it just packaged it better for every possible audience segment. IMHO, that makes WoW undebateably a phenomanal success; but great? Only if sales totals is how you're specifically defining "greatness".

Personally, I prefer to look a little deeper and associate "greatness" with games that push the entire gaming genre forward, that define entirely new ways we play games. In that respect, WoW fails the test. If I were to pick a "great" MMO, it would have to be Ultima Online because they were the first successful MMO, garnering hundreds of thousands of subscribers beck when we were all running Pentium 1s.

It revolutionized MMOs.
I just don't see it...I haven't played, but it (and every other MMO, including the new hot kid on the block, Age Of Conan) look exactly like every MMO that has come before. I see no revolution...I just see the previous gameplay elements put together better than any previous MMO. That's a big deal, and definitely Blizzard deserves the cash they are raking in. But that's not revolutionaty, it's evolutionary.

My problem exactly. Reader's/viewer's choice awards in anything are worthless, because the average person doesn't think critically about this stuff...they just spout out their current favorite from the last 12 months, if we're lucky. Usually it's whatever they are currently latched onto, which is why newbies like CoD4 and (the wildly underserving) Crysis made the list. People are stupid.

There was a time when gaming magazines didn't pander to readers like this, when they would actually look at the entire history of gaming, recognize the innovations that they made in their time, and judged them all accordingly. Which is why ancient games like Ultima 4 was consistently at the top of every list for years and years; now, 99% of you reading this thread wouldn't even consider playing such an old game. (And that perspective is not without merit; old games don't always age well, the gameplay is going to seem simplistic and tired...which is why the games need to be considered with respect to their era, not current designs and technologies. Compare it with movies: most of the so called "greatest movies ever made" are old and, in my opinion, lame and stupid! But that's because I'm not a good movie critic, I'm not very good at recognizing those movies' place in history.)

It got an average score of 97% which is not only the highest score any FPS game has ever achieved but I'm pretty sure its the highest average score of any game (dont count that as an official statement though).
If you want to limit the context to FPS, the argument becomes a little stronger. However, I would still contend that both Doom and the original Half-Life stand above HL2; because they both innovated within the genre in ways that HL2 didn't. Don't get me wrong, I loved HL2; but what exactly was "new" in it? Besides the gravity gun, I can't think of any innovations that weren't available in HL1. And of course, Doom stands above them all as basically "inventing" the genre. (Technically it was Wolfenstein 3D or Marathon that did FPS first, but Doom was the first real "smash" that everyone "had to have". But that's another debate.)

And no, HL2 is not the best rated game ever. That distinction has belonged to Zelda: Ocarina of Time for a long time now. Its metacritic rating is a whopping 99%. By comparison, Half-Life 1 and HL2 are both only at 96%. Very respectable score, but not even close to being
"best rated ever".

I don't know that Half Life 2 is the greatest game ever, but I can say without hesitation that it is by far the greatest I have ever played. As VD says, it didn't really bring anything new to the table save the gravity gun and some kickass physics, but what it did do is get nearly everything else PERFECT. (Except for lack of aiming down the sights, which to me, is the game's only flaw.) No other game has touched me as HL2 has. A few have come close - Halo, Bioshock, Call of Duty and more recently, GTAIV, but nothing's ever beaten it. And the Episodes are simply giving me more of the gooey greatness.

Also, the best non-pc game ever made is Duck Hunt for the NES. If you disagree, you're dumb and wrong.

there is no way anyone can be objective in choosing top 10 games. there will be opinions but their opinions may be valid as long as they have good enough reasons to back it up, but it remains that the rankings are still subjective. HL2 does indeed deserve a spot in the top 10 (imho) but deciding the ranks of these top 10 games will definitely be a tough job and many will disagree to the ranks given but it must be realized that its subjective and should be taken as such.

It's got a metacritic of 98, right behind Zelda OoT. I love it, but it's not a HL2 beater for me. Of course, I'm no where near finishing the game, so I dunno.
