And in 2 years, a 4 GHz quad will be the norm, and affordable. 2 years is an eternity in PC Hardware terms.

Upgrade whenever quads are mainstream useful. No idea when that will be. By the time Quads are used in games, Octo-Cores will be out, and not fullt utilized. Hardware is just advancing faster than software is, and most businesses are afraid of change, so a lot of Apps are just now fully utilizing dual core, so quad is still a ways down the road. There is no point in being 100% Top of the Line in PCs. 1 or 2 steps below top of the line gets you great performance, better utilization of your hardware, and a lot mroe money in your pocket.

I wouldn't bother with a GTX280. They are super expensive, and we don't have any word as far as performance goes, yet. I would just get a 9800GTX and not have to sit around waiting. Also, DDR3 is a bit of a waste, but to each his own, I suppose. Apart from that, it looks great. And just so you know, you could get the E8400 and easily overclock it just as high as the E8500.

CPU -e8500-not going their
cooler -zerotherm nirvana zv120-why do u want this cooler i havnt heard much about it if your gona spend this money on a pc why not keep the damn thing cool go with a good tuniq tower or true and youll be happier in the end.
power -corsair 750w-same psu im getting ^_^
mobo -xfx 790i ultra sli (thx dan12288 )-appears your set on the 790i its not a bad board i just think ddr3 is expensive.
RAM -2x1gb ddr3 ocz platinium-u havnt given much info on the ram latencies and speed are kinda important you should make sure it isnt crappy, give us a link to the ram u want.
case -nzxt tempest (seems to be the same as antec nine hundred just bigger and cheaper^^)-you should go with a bit of a nicer case for this nice of a setup once again i say at least LOOK INTO the antec 1200, the Armor+, and any of the big Lian Li's.
HDD -seagate 7200.11 500gb 32mb cache OR wd caviar se16 750gb-go with the seagate.
GPU - waiting for gtx280 -going to be good but keep in mind its going to be like 600 bucks and for that you could sli 2 8800gts 512's for a cool 200 dollar margin get it all right now and worry about upgrading when they go down in price and get switched out for the b version with the 55nm enstead of 65.
sound -creative xi-fi extreme gamer-ive heard a lot of bad things about their drives im getting a auzentech prelude hear great things about them.

well i chose this setup because i don't build the pc myself. i'll configurate it in an online pc configurator because i have no experience in building a pc. another point is that here in europe some of the components like the antec 1200 or tunic cooler aren't available (yet). for the HDD i'll get a couple of seagates 7200.11 500gb. i heard they are fast. and here's the link for the ram, found them on newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227255
as for the gpu, i'll take a couple of 8800gts 512mb in sli, save some money for future investments. i don't think that i'll take such an expensive soundcard like the prelude because i don't think you will notice a big difference in sound.
