My Dell inspiron 5100 mb is toast need help finding replacement

Well this morning my mother was playing a game and when she exited out the screen went white and things started to get very hot. She pulled the power cable and ran it back to me, I was asleep and she woke me up frantically saying its really hot here lol, (THX mom) I felt around for a second and realized the battery was still in. When I reached for the battery my thumb slipped off the release mechanism and landed on the area where the CPU is, thus resulting in a blistered thumb, YAY.

Well, I got it torn down and while the CPU "looks" ok, I have no way of testing it to verify, but am 99% certain that the MB is toast. There are three chips that are next to the CPU that have a nice char look on top of them. The CPU heatsink has a little bit of bluing on it and the flimsy metal shroud that goes over that, shows significant bluing. I was able to test the CPU fan and it's nonoperational.

At this point I am not sure if replacement parts are going to be worth the value of this laptop or not, I am having a difficult time finding any cross reference numbers for this MB and the ones that are on the MB don't bring up too many replacement parts. From what I can gather this MB# is BDW00 LA-1452 REV 1.0.

Oh, BTW, the warranty expired about 4 months ago, so I am pretty certain that those damn dell implanted warranty chips engaged to help matters along :sarcasm:

While we are at it, is there an upgrade video card that could be put in here instead of the crappy ATI 7500 16/32MB stuff? CPU is/was a pent 4 2.66GHZ

a couple of pics to help things along hahahaha

This is the video chip on the MB not on the ATI card itself

This is the bottom of the heatsink for the video chip on the MB

Flimsy CPU metal thing

CPU heatsink

Model number on the MB

Uhm... I think you'd be better off trying to find yourself a new laptop >< that thing sounds like its finished... but I can't really suggest more than that as I have no experience with this kind of thing ><

You'd be better off finding a new laptop. You could probably replace the parts, though I don't know it it will take an upgraded graphics card, but it wouldn't be worth it; far cheaper and easier to buy a new laptop.

Just won an auction that had the MB, CPU (2.4GHZ but I will be able to test mine at least) memory, VC, heatsink/cooler for $140 shipped. I have been watching these go for 300-500 on fleaybay still and they aren't quiet as upgraded as mine was/is. (I know it's still old and serisouly outdated but mom likes it more than my new dell 1520 so w/e) I might be able to sell the other stuff for half of what I just paid to get a replacement MB for mine. Can hope anyways.

I didn't think i did too bad considering. I still wish I knew what happened though. Kind of concerning on how it just "went up in smoke". Thats really the first time I have had any computer do that with out any "user errors" haha

On a side note the desktop MB I am on right now was struck by lightning through the lan port and while that didn't work any longer the rest of the board runs pretty good considering haha. You should have seen the modem/router it hit
