Q6600 Temps Normal?

Thread Starter
I've got my Q6600 running at 3.15 Ghz at 1.2565V. I've started Orthos testing and I'm getting around 55C after only a couple of minutes. I've a Tuniq Tower strapped to the processor. The ambient in my room gets pretty high (80-85F). Are these kind of temps normal for the Q6600 at this speed?

With your setup you should be running alittle cooler. But your ambient temp is pretty high, so thats about right. I still think you can get it alittle cooler. How's you wire management, and your air flow?

With that ambient yes. I am currently Priming mine at 3.25GHz and the top so far is 52C and it is about 20C Ambient and I have a Tuniq on the Test machine.

I managed my wires a couple of months ago. It could be a little cleaner, but I don't think it's blocking the airflow. I've moved the fan in the HDD slot on the bottom to the top so it's blowing over the MB instead of the PSU. The air flow seems to be really good, but I'm going to order a couple more fans to give me some more.

Those temps seem reasonable since I have the same cpu and cooler as you.

My q6600 is at 3.6ghz at about 67c full load.

To cool it down more I would try this method.
The next time I replace something in my computer I am going to try this method as well.

Okay thanks guys. You've calmed my fears. The temps haven't spiked above 55C and I've been stressing for half an hour. Rep+ to all. Also, just one more question, what should the FSB voltage be set to? I currently have it at 1.3V.

I've got like 1.47 volts in mine to get it to 3.6ghz.

I think Intel limits the recommended voltage to 1.35v, so you could safely go to 1.35v and overclock accordingly.

I managed to get a stable 3.2ghz at 1.35v.

This is a different voltage though. It doesn't have all the intervals the core voltage has, it just goes from 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, to 1.5. Mine was automatically set the 1.4, but I lowered it and it seems to be running fine.

55c aint too bad, but you need to find a way of getting those ambients down. This is the main reason ppl have temp issues with Quad Cores. I myself have the same issue, my ambients get pretty hot and having a hot NB and 2x 9800GX2's don't help matters.

Besides you have plenty of headroom to go. A G0 stepping thermal limit is 71c, so your good.

1.4 is pretty safe imo, these chips are built to last like 10 years or something close to that. Sure overvolting it a little will shorten its life, but I don't plan on having this cpu for 10 years.

One thing you will have to take into consideration is that unbearable ambient heat if you decide to overclock more.
