Ballstix Tracers Overheating?

Thread Starter
Recently, my pc has been freezing up (not OS related) I have a dual-boot Windows//Linux and this occurs on both. After my pc froze for the 3rd time today i was fed up and decided to open my box up and see if it was a hardware problem. When touching my ram its very HOT almost too hot to touch, is this normal? (its not overclocked). Another thing I've noticed was that when the pc freezes: 1. the screen doesnt move from its current position (as if someone pushed the pause button on the monitor's input) 2. the harddrive's activity light ceases to blink.

It's normal for it to get hot, but unless your system is under fairly heavy load, it should not be as hot as you describe.

What voltage are you using?

Have your tried running Memtest86(+)?

Any way for you to actively cool the memory?

yeah around 2.2 volts things should be pretty normal anything higher things start to get toasty

edit: Try putting a 120 or 92 mm fan over the top of the modules, if it helps it helps

2.2v is a bit much, could very well have killed the memory. Yes, I know they are rated at 2.2v. Crucial exaggerates...badly.

Try cooling the memory and see if the errors go a way. If they don't, it's probably time for an RMA.

Sorry about your problem here. It seems like there are more and more threads popping up about Ballistix memory going bad or causing problems. I've even had a stick die on me within the last couple weeks.
Sounds like your ram.

anything over about 1.95v should not be run without some form of active cooling - either a corsair dominator fan thing - or custom make one.

To custom make it:
get 2 80mm fans
cable tie them together
get some motherboard standoffs/long screws and make poles above the ram [using the normal ATX holes in the PCB of the motherboard]
Screw the fans on top
Cooled ram

Picture of my setup on my old board:

Current setup [see fan at top of ram and on the side of ram in the HDD rack]

Then run memtest again and see if you still get errors.

Failing all that - you now have a ram cooler for your RMA returned RAM
