Upgrading my computer SLI

Thread Starter
Hi all, just thought i'd ask for some advice.

I have a BFG 7900GS graphics card in my PC and I recently bought another 7900GS graphics card as I was hoping to put them both in my PC together.

Obviously i'm going to need to buy a new motherboard which has SLI, the micro ATX one I have at the moment is great though.

My question is, is it worth it? Am I likely to notice much difference with an SLI motherboard and the extra 7900GS card?

If so can anyone recommend a good value motherboard? (I really like the layout and features of the one I already have)

Please bear in mind, I am on a very tight budget, so if it's not a noticable improvement it's probably not worth the time and money for me.

Any suggestions and/or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

edit: I assume I would also need a new PSU, am I right?

Thanks again

First of all, your budget... I'm pretty sure you can pick up an am2 SLI board for a pretty decent price, and since you already have the card, go for it... you'll notice a real improvement...

Aye me too, they are on sale now for $179, but if you are set on the 7900gs go for the SLI.

The older SLI cards show a signifigant boost in performance. I had 6600GT in sli, pairs of 7800gt, 7800gtx and 7900gtx. Every time I added the second card, I got about a 30-40% speed increase.

Yes you need a new PSU.. And SLi is a great idea with those cards. But rather than trying to find one you could get an 8800GT, 8800GTS 512mb, Or even a 9600GT But either way you go you will be needing a new power suply. a Good 500w PSU is mandatory these days

I set up a 7950GT sli system for my dad years ago, it is true that older cards see a good performance increase because the drivers for them are ver mature.

As to your question I would get a new mobo only if you get one very cheaply as sli'ed 7800gs's may be alot better than a single one it still isnt very powerfull.

Oh BTW if the 7800gs needs a sepperate power cable then you earthwatts psu will not cope however if that model is powered soley by the pci/agp/pci-e slot then is might be ok, prolly cutting it a little close tho.

TheInsurgent, the earthwatts cuts it close to 320watts with the two 12volt rails combined. With the two cards SLI'ed you'd probably be between 200-250watts total system power at full load. The 7900GS doesn't draw that much. Amperage wise you definitely do not have enough. If your budget permits I'd go with something that Corsair offers such as the 520HX.

Good luck
