As far as desktops go, build your own, it's very easy. You will fall in love with the simplicity and probably pick up the overclocking habit. (it's very addicting) The crap dell puts into their desktops is worthless. The psu's are junk, the mobo's are frightningly terrible, and the memory is worthless. All in all, sub-par all the way around.
So I've heard. My local computer store might be able to get me a pretty good deal on parts and build a system for me then when I grow some balls I might try messing with it.

Hardly. I didn't build one or two computers and start acting like I know everything. Dude, I work in a PC repair shop doing this crap all day, every day. I have taken apart and rebuilt HUNDREDS of PCs and laptops. I think I am in a pretty good spot to know what is better.

Hmm, well they use cheap parts and stuff so from my experience prebuilts can be annoying. You may have to buy a new psu too. If you do get a prebuilt one thing i advise you to do is use your legal COA and download the iso of whatever OS comes with it that doesnt have all their crap on it. It makes it run so much better and doesnt void the warranty. If you do it as soon as you get it, theres no programs or data you will lose either.
