ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe and Barriers

I have a minor problem when overclocking my cpu. I know how to get around it, but I want to know if anyone else is having this problem?

I have an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe. When I try to overclock my AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200+, I have a hard time getting it over 2.6Mhz. Once I get it over, it will go really high, but it takes about 70 to 75 attempts to get it beyond 2.6.

The only way that I can successfully get it over 2.6 is by lowering the multipluer to 9 and raising the FSB to 290. It takes a lot of restarts to get it to boot.

Any ideas why it is so hard to get over 2.6?

Any and all ideas are welcome. If anyone has any problems with their MB that are like this, feel free to post it here.

Well depending on your stepping 2.6 isn't a horrible OC for a Manny, Most I have seen hit a max of around 2.7ghz, so you aren't that far off. Also, if that is 4x1GB of RAM, back in the day I seem to remember 939 AMDs having issues getting really high clocks with more than 2 sticks of RAM.

Thanks. I'll try taking out 2GB of ram.

But, I've hit 2.7 on this board lots of times w/ 4GB of ram??? Is it just more unstable with that amount of ram.

I topped out at 2.6GHz with the exact same setup on water, but that was with cheapo RAM. Be glad you got that because although I have seen a few successful 2.7GHz rigs, many top out at 2.5GHz.

If I remember correctly it is a stability thing dealing with the IMC on the AMD chips they just don't handle 4 DIMMs very well.

Well first of all...running 4 sticks of RAM will force you to use DDR333 and 2T command rate. Of course it CAN be overclocked past that...but it does put more stress on the memory controller...hence why by default it clocks them down.

Also...you're running a Manchester core CPU. Consider yourself lucky to be able to hit 2.7 even if its just to boot with (not stable). 2.6GHz is pretty well the norm with a Manchester core. There are "lucky" chips that can sometimes be stable past that barrier...but sounds to me like you don't have one of those "lucky" chips.

My own personal Manchester chip with my A8N maxed out at 2.55GHz stable and 2.97GHz suicide run (see sig). They just don't clock that high . Hence why I went Opty.
