Would running NotFreds cause the computer to be unable to do other tasks? Is it just a stripped down OS with fah on it?

Yes. Because notfreds starts right after the bios loads, and the operating system never even loads. But that puts full cpu and ram power to folding. Because you don't have to share resources with the operating system.

BUT. You can also run notfreds in vmware. It's just not as fast.

I've download the NOTFRED for USB and can't seem to get it to work with Windows XP 32-bit and the XP Graphical client 5.03.

Plus, does this thing need to be on a jump drive USB that boots up the computer?

To make this work would be the best thing for me.

Here's my plan. At home I got this 522Mhz machine that's so slooooow. It's on DSL. At my bothers house, he has a dual process, dual core machine Win XP-Pro 64-bit with no internet connection. I would like to run F@H on the USB drive and retrieve it over the weekend each week. This would add nicely to my points from his number crunching machine.

Please advise on how to get this to run. I've done the XP network loopback too without getting F@H to stop looking for a secondary connection to fold. Bummer.

OK. Here's what you wanna do. Go to his site and use the CD generator. Then burn the CD and pop it into your computer. Then pop in the flash drive. Set bios priorities to CD ROM, then USB drive. The CD will load the notfreds onto the USB flash drive. You could also try just using the USB version. But Gibson and I found the CD to USB drive method always works. Good luck.

So Mr. Gibson. You will eventually be able to run each rig without a hard drive. Or graphics card even.

And the production will definitely increase over WinSMP. And the electricity bill will go down also.

When you have it all set up and running. It should look something like this......

OK. I know. I used that picture before. But I still get a out of it.

Yep, I'm going to have a big sale. Should be able to get rid of 7 h/d's and 7 video cards, thanks to you. I have no idea what I'm going to do with all those cases now!

haha. Scottie spotted a quad on eBay this morning. I was outside mowing the lawn and the little bugger bid on it. Now I'm out 202 bucks.
But hey. I needed that for testing purposes anyways. Kinda hard to write a guide that includes quads when you are guessing half the time

Stop blaming your impulsive buying on poor Scottie What are you going to do with all your other E8400's then?

Scottie needs to set up some sort of eBay URL block. He's down to cheap dry dog food now. Thanks to eBay. I know. I'll start selling instead of buying! I guess I'll sell the E8400 on ebay.
