Q9300 Overclock

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I just bought a new computer, I'll list specs for you now:
Intel Q9300 2.5GHz
OCZ12800 DD3 1600FSB 4GB
EVGA 790i ultra mobo
EVGA 9800GTX
Raptorx HDD
Thermal take Water cooling
Vista 64

Anyhow this is my first time overclocking, I'm pretty sure I have all the basics studied, I've been reading on it a lot. Right now I have my CPU at 3.3GHz with a 1760FSB, vcore set at 1.3 however in the BIOS monitor is stays down around 1.2 and under load using OCCT it reports 1.23 and 1.26 Idle. First core is at 47C degrees idle and 4th core the hottest is at 56C. Under load the 4th core gets up to 72C and first core at 67C.

My ram (unlinked) is at the advertised speeds 1600FSB 7-6-6-24 1.9Volts. I have tried 1700FSB 1.95Volts (EVP) but got errors in memtest, I haven't touched the timings since I don't know enough about them.

So I guess my questions are,
Do my settings currently look fine to you guys?
Can I get more out of my settings with tweaks I may have missed?
My Cpu I think is hot im not really sure, thought I'd get lower temps with water, should I reseat the block?
Do you think I can get my timings lower, which ones would I want to changed first, how should I go about doing the timings?

Thanks for the help guys This is a good community.

Use Realtemp for your q93.

Don't worry about ram timings, leave them stock until you get to a stable proc speed.

Theres always overclocking the 9800GTX but thats a different topic

If you wanna see if the CPU can go even faster, loosen up the timings on the ram so they can 1700FSB + and see how fast your q9300 can go. Fast CPU > Fast ram.

Your temps seem high though and their not even that extremly clocked and their 45nm to top it off. I would reseat the block.

RealTemp reports 1st core 35 4th 47 under load they are 53 and 60

The ram still affects the CPU even though they are unlinked? Interesting.

I also should add that I get errors in OCCT 1800+fsb

and why is the vcore lower than what I set it to? Does it just use what it needs and 1.3 will be the max?

Any1 around?

Your voltage drops because of 'vdroop'

Not all of the voltage supplied reaches the CPU, its a common motherboard minor fault, basically some of the voltage leaks out along its way to the CPU

You can do simple modifications to your motherboard to reduce this happening, though it isnt a major worry

Try putting your voltage up a bit more in your BIOS then see what it reads in CPU-Z

Oh I see, thanks for explaining. Do you thing theres any settings I could tweak to OC even more? Is it safe to keep raising the vcore more? I read that the max vcore for this cpu is like 1.36~ so I was trying to keep a margin.

Well I got my Cpu at 3.5Ghz, upping the vcore on it doesn't seem to help at all to go higher and I don't want to go over the VID. I turned my ram timing all the way down from 7-6-6-24 2T. I was able to get the ram to match the FSB (1876) and boot into the OS, however it is not stable. Since I can't sync my FSB do I want to get the highest bus for my ram at the cost of timings and then lower the cpu bus to sync them? or should i keep my cpu where it is at and keep them un-sync'd? How important is ram timings vs getting a high bus anyhow?
