Thinkpad T61vs. ???? Help me decide.

Ok, I have a choice of in a month getting a laptop for school [College].
I am extremely mobile, constantly traveling, and I don't want to have my
rig in the dorms.

Current contender, IBM Thinkpad T61 $1380.
It's suppose to be extremely solid laptop, magnesium alloy hinges and a titanium roll cage and HDD shock senor/absorber.

Things I'll be doing with it:
Constantly typing homework/Surfing the Web
Music, I'm an audiophile, I'll probably get a bigger HDD.
Playing Battlefield 2142

Ok, so it has an Quadro FX 570M, and in 3Dmark 06 it gets 3862 pts,. I know its meant to be a CAD card, but lenovo doesn't offer standard GPU's anymore. In Command and Conquer 3 at Resolution 1280x800, Presets at "high", AA off - it gets 26-28fps, well playable or Supreme Commander Resolution 1280x800, Detail Presets at "high" - 23-50fps, with about 27 fps during game well playable. Are there any other laptops, in the price range, that over that much in a laptop, and I should check out? My max is about 1600$.

You don't want your rig in the dorms? Why not?

If you want a laptop to play games on go with the XPS or Alienware.

IBMs are solid but not built for gaming. They are the PC equivalent of Macpros in laptops.

It's loud, it creates a lot of heat, messy roomates, + I need a laptop as I'm never in the dorms to actually use the rig, so It's gonna get sold.

Well, I don't want to play games like bioshock, I just want to play BF2142, and all that needs to play on high settings is an 8600GT 256 [at my house, my media server plays it fine with that, and a e6400]

oh, and i get 10% with a coupon, so 1260$ for the laptop ! that's taxes!

If you're going just for BF2142, that T61 should suit you just fine. The FX 570M is the workstation equivalent of a 8600m GT.

god, ender i eye balled that laptop for like an hour, to see if it should haha.
and 8800 GTS 512 for a graphics card, for 1300$, that's an extremely good
deal IMO, cause a rig of the same caliber cost about 1100$ [just built a friend one]

haha the only thing that made me say NO NO NO, was that it was a gateway [i use to work in a repair depot, and gateway's old laptops were crap, i dont know about the new ones] and that it weighs 9.6 lbs, i need a laptop to be rather portable. thanks, rep!

Keep this in mind: Gaming laptops batteries usually do not last long.
