Too much virtual memory?

Thread Starter
I have read way too many topics concerning virtual memory and hearing other people's stories on how they have too little, but what i hate is that no one ever explained is disadvantage of having too much virtual memory and I don't understand why.

I have 2 gb of physical ram using windows xp pro and i heard about the rule of thumb (1.5 x physical ram) and windows also recommends for me to set the virtual memory to 3 gigs (which i did), but what I don't get is why can't I just set it to 4 gigs. Is their a disadvantage? Apparently since people limit the amount of virtual ram on their pc their probably is, but what is it?

And also, 3 gigs is a good place to set my virtual ram, right?

Thanks for any answers.

Whatever you want, this is an endless debate.

My only advice, set the min and max amount to the same value.

I do that too, it prevents needless writing of the disk...

If you have 4GB of RAM, set a 4GB pagefile, if you have 8GB and don't do major modeling work, you can disable it entirely (or set it to 16MB). It's very hard to use 8GB unless your doing some major 3D work in professional applications.

2GB of RAM I would use 1GB per harddrive (so in my case) a total of 4GB.

Thanks guys for responding but i don't think you guys answered my question. The question is "Why can't i set the virtual ram to the maximum i can possibly set up?" What are the disadvantages of having too much virtual ram?

No real disadvantages that i can think of apart from the above one.

Thank for the answer.

So if i have tons of hdd space i might as well set virtual memory to the maximum?

What i really don't get is why do people, with tons of hdd space limit the amount of virtual ram they could potentially have?

I thought that reading from the hd was slower so having it on the disk and also being large it would take more time to access. But if vwgti is right and it only uses it when it needs it depending on what you do it may not use it idk, i always set it to 1.5x so in your case 3 gb min and max, i always thought it was bad to set it to something rediculously high like 20 gb or whatever. like it would we worse performance. I guess try it and see if you can see a difference.

I also had a feeling that this was the case. Could anyone clear that up?
