Too much virtual memory? - Page 2

Having your computer read from a paging file can be really slow as opposed to reading from your ram. Its designed to be there so that if you ever run out've memory it will use that file on the hardrive as avalible ram. I think it should only be used as a last resort. If you have 2+ gigs and are just doing everyday stuff like browsing the internet and listening to music you dont need 3 more gigs of paging file space.

I can understand why a person wouldn't need too much virtual space, but if there aren't any penalties for setting virtual memory as much as a person wanted then why wouldn't that person set it to the max?

Because in most cases you're taking up hardrive space that will never be used. It's like having a 2gig music file that is nothing but silence. It's wasted space.

But if the space is needed can't a person simply put back the virtual memory to reasonable place to gain that hdd space back? also, I don't think, now in day, a person is going to be left with 1 or 2 gb of space at any point of his computer's life.
