Q9450 OC nightmare? - Page 2

OK, still not able to boot but at least it gets through the BIOS and stuff ... just rebooting itsself when going to start with the Windows boot. Here's the settings:

I've already tried to upper the FSB Terminator Voltage as well (goes from 1.2 to 1.44) but that didn't do any good. Also, I've noticed many people stating to put their CPU voltage to 1.36 and stuff, but mine jumps from 1.25V to 1.375V with no in betweens (the same for the other voltages as well!). The reference voltages have much smaller values ...

Anyone any idea please?

i think you might be having a "straps" problem- this outlines them (read the last part for straps but as a whole a great guide)

I have a Q9450 and have nothing but trouble with it. I can get it to 3.2 but its not stable no matter what voltages I set even with auto voltages still unstable. If I try to set it 3.4 (425) it freezes at the post screen. When I had my e6750 in my rig I got it at 3.4 with no problems at all. Your the 3rd person I have seen with trouble with 9450. I saw over at xtremesytems someone had trouble getting to 3.0 with theirs.

The memory was already on many voltages but that didn't help at all. Most people even adviced me to keep it on its default 1.5v. As for the NB voltage: 1.58V is my maximum as the next step is 1.67V (I can't push it bit by bit, it's always with complete steps) and that's a "RED" value (as in: not safe) according to the BIOS ...

Maybe MSI has some 'secret mode' you can start (like the 'F4') in order to be able to push it one step at the time but I doubt it somehow ...

Interesting article ... this may be the issue but another great thing I've read in this article is that it might be time to start upping the southbridge voltage as well. It aborts Windows boot and reboots so ...

Too bad it's soooo hard to find a better explanation from all the parameters I've mentioned for MSI ... should probably have bought another one but the WC of the NB and SB looks (and is!) so cool ... did expect a bit more of a (almost) 300€ mobo though ...

My thought is that 1.375v on your CPU isn't enough. There are some people with my processor that get to 3.6GHz on 1.37v, but I can't get there on less than 1.45v. Don't bother with what voltages you see other people getting speeds with, each chip can vary a lot. Try something higher and see if you can get it stable.

With that whopper of a cooling system you have, don't be too stingy on the processor. Again, I don't think you should need to push your FSB to get speeds this low (425MHz), this isn't an Nforce board. I don't think it's got much to do with your FSB...

robred your also using a MUCH different CPU.
he is using a 45nm cpu while your using a 65nm cpu.
just from my own experience there I can hit 3.6ghz on my e6600 at 1.5v on my x3350 I can hit that same 3.6ghz at 1.256v

as far as those of you having problems with the q9450 how sure are you it is a CPU problem and not a MB problem? mb plays a big role in how well these will clock.

You're 'dead right' on the CPU voltage ... anyway, my next 'step' in the BIOS is 1.5v which would be 'killing' for a 45nm CPU ...

As for the mobo: I've seen pretty nice OC's on the X38 Diamond (the X38 Hydrogen is the X38 Diamond with watercooling) so it should be an OK board for OC'ing. Plus I'm not trying the ulter limits here ... I'd be very satisfied to hit 3.6 GHz stable with this one ...

for all you MSI owners always being faced with other parameters (and not totaly sure of what all those MSI parameters mean): check this article!

It explains every single setting one at the time. Though it's about a X48 board, settings are identical to the X38 board (and probably many other MSI boards as well)

are those with quads or dual cores though?

there are many boards out there that kick arse with a dual but put a quad in there and it buckles. hell my own board I can hit right near 500mhz FSb with a dual but with a quad it's only 100% stable at 440mhz though I run 450 with it being about 99% stable so to speak.

I've even seen some that hit around 550 or so with a dual core but then again same thing only hit 450-470 with a quad.

you might just be at the boards limit. only other thing I can think though is if you can't hit 400 at all but can at least post at 425 you might try lowering it a little to 415 or so and see if you can get a little better results.
