New HDD = Reactivation?

Thread Starter
Ok, so soon I will be purchasing a 500GB HD, and I will be using it as my new primary drive. If i reinstall vista OEM onto it (its on my current hard drive now) will I need to reactivate it?

Thanks in advance

They'll probably ask you to reactivate it. If so, it's not a big deal, and you'll have like three days to do it. The only reason you'd have to repurchase Windows OEM is if you replace the motherboard. Good luck!

Yea you will have to re-activate it. but like he said it is quick and painless.

It just gives you a number to ring and a ?16 digit? code. You ring the number and state the code it gives you and they give you a new serial key. Really is that simple

Sweeeet. Cheers guys, lemme just clear it up:
  • I put in new hard drive
  • Install Vista / everything else
  • It pops up and asks me to activate
  • I ring the number - give them the 16 digit code i gives me
  • They give me new key, I enter that key in the boxes?

Thanks again guys, +rep to all

Yep, that is basically the exact step by step procedure. I'm not sure if it is 16 digits. But i remember it being pretty long, so make sure you are sat at your PC when you make the call.

You can then confirm the activation has worked before you put the phone down

But i must add, this was the procedure for XP. But it was pretty effective and i doubt they have changed it. But it will tell you how to re-activate it when you click on the activation tab anyways.

It's the same for Vista. Now they have an automated machine for Vista also. Makes it easier when you can't understand the Indian guy with a thick accent.
