Cheap @$$ fan mod

Thread Starter
My brother decided to upgrade his rig, but didn't want to buy a new case. The one he has (unbranded) had little cooling so I decided to add a 120 mm fan to the front of the case to add some flow. The problem was that there wasn't enough holes in the front for the fan to move enough air, so instead of drilling the case, I decided to mod the fan, in a cheap and fast manner with materials I had at hand. All I did was glue and sew some pieces of foam to the corners of the fan, which gave it more room to pull some air.

Any comments/suggestions are welcome, as always!

You must have felt so bad comparing your rig to his

Keep in mind you can buy a new, unhorrible, case for around 25 bucks, though. And maybe remind him that he can keep the side open if his temps are still high

If i'm not mistaken, you should have the fan facing the other direction to bring air into the case from there. Regardless, it will still be restricted by the less than adequate amount of holes that are in that area.

I do understand you were limited by the materials you have on hand, but a quick snip of the "grid" that's there and reversing the fan to blow into the case will give you a bit more fresh air to that PCI-e card.

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do though

Notice the fan sticker is facing towards the case. Didn't you read ''Air cooling for dummies'' I actually put that in there lololol.

But yeah, it won't suck air into the case as much as it circulates air, which is I think what he wanted judging by his second phrase.

if you slip out the case speaker, and lay it on the bottom using its own magnet, you would have a more than adequate area to properly mount that 120 in the front. You wouldnt believe how easy it is to lay the case on its back and put a 4.5" holesaw straight thru that b*tch . If you dont want to cut the face bezel you can cut just the chasis. I know you said you dont want to cut the case but what you have now seems close to useless imho. If you click the link in my sig youll see near the very beginning where I did exactly this mod on an old beige case that I am resurrecting for my daughter. Its fun and functional!

Thanks for they replies guys! Well actually the fan is pulling air onto the mobo, not from it, as it should (This fan has stickers on BOTH of its sides hehe). Also my bro did notice a drop in temps when he had tried leaving the side panel open, 5 C to be exact . Thanks for the suggestions about cutting the holes in the front panel and shifting the speaker, I'll tell him tomorrow and if he wants he can do it himself . Thanks again guys.
