It all comes down to this, can you afford to lose your files again?
My Raid0 array got corrupt once as well, but i do have a backup and can get back up and running in an hour, installing windows and all.
If you backup your important files and dont care if the array fails at one point, you should then try it out again, the extra speed is welcome.

The failure rate on hard drives nowadays is so low, it's silly not to RAID0, I mean for the most of us what are we going to lose, our mp3 collections?
Well if the new hardware are the two hard disks in his system now, he would need another disk for that. Plus it would probably slow the system down due to the chipset, not making it very worth while.
What kind of new hardware did you get phillipjos?

I am currently using 128k stripe but my first go was with 64k, which seemed a tad faster to me, could have been just an illusion

128k stripe is going to offer your the best performance.

As far as the risk. If you have another hd you can backup those important text documents and pictures. Remember that music is usually backed up on your mp3 player.

If you want RAID5 you will need a >$200 raid controller to get good performance.
