Q6600 vs E8400

Hello all! well, ive got a limited budget.. this is what im about to order.

http://www.itsdirect.com.au/com_prod...ub_category=15

http://www.itsdirect.com.au/com_prod...Cache_G0_CHIP_

http://www.itsdirect.com.au/com_prod...75_Motherboard

Yes its a cheap motherboard, i don't have the best budget. Its cheap ram to, but i don't intend on overclocking the ram.

Now i have 2 questions.

1. I hear many people overclocking a Q6600 to 3.0ghz (especially with G0 stepping) with stock heatsink etc. Im wondering if id be able to do this?

2. Im deciding between Q6600 and E8400. Im a gamer, i prefer lots of fps, and from what i hear the E8400 would give more fps, except.. if it only gives a little more, id rather go with the Q6600 as im sure that has far better other benifits such as multitasking, and at least in 2 years when theres 3-4 core games id still be happy.

How much better is that E8400.. i really like this Q6600 because its quad and im sure it has far more benifits than the E8400 besides fps.

Please answer my questions thank you.

Also i dont have any more money, the E8400 is $4 more than the Q6600 so thats not a big deal, but i cant change the other 2 peices.

3.0GHz is an easy overclock for a Q6600 on the intel P35 chipset, but it might be a bit toasty on the stock intel HSF.

I dont think that you would get many more FPS between a Q6600 and an E8400, i was in the same boat as you not so long back... Q6600 or E8400... i went with the quad and im glad i did

well with the ram @667 it maybe a little tougher to get to 3.0 memory might hold you back. I would get DDR2 6400 ram instead 2x1gb sticks it will be cheaper also. CPU speed is more important than 4 cores for games

667MHz ram should be fine if he only want to go to 3GHz.... 333x9 with a 1:1 divider = CPU @ 3.0GHz and RAM at 667MHz, which means as long as his ram can do its stock speed he will be fine

Hey thanks for your answer it really helped me.

Looking at your system it looks like the one ill be making, different brands and you have 6400 ram. but how does that run in games? always wanted to talk to someone who has similar to the build im making. will have it within 2 weeks. Also getting my 8800GT 512mb tomorrow, so im just wondering if you can name a heep of games you have, name their detail and the average FPS you get. it would really help me thanks bro

Well ive got lots of games.... to many to list. Crysis, Gears of War, DiRT, COD4, Assissins Creed, FSX to name a few... They all play on max settings and are all realy smooth, my mate has got a PS3 and id say my PC games look nicer and play faster. On the Crysis benchmark test with everything on high i get 45FPS DX10 and 49FPS DX9.

You wont regret buying a Q6600 and an 8800GT believe me.... SUPERB, i had an ATI X1950 Pro 512MB before this one which is a good card but my new 8800GT just blows it away.

Agreed. You maybe be lucky if you get the good batch of the G0 Q6600 and OC pretty good. Got my Q6600 like a week ago and I got it to 3.6ghz No problem, Prime95 Passed 24hour stability. gonna try getting to 4ghz when I got my watercooling.

Quad Q6600 is the way to go, and if ya got the money, get a eVGA 9800GTX and get the 90day (now 120days) Step Up Program (You can return your card and get the next better card and pay the difference) .

And if you are planning to OC, go for the Q9450 45nm (less power needed and less heat, better for OC)

E8400 overclocks are godly

1.30 volts = 4300mhz

Q6600, more volts=more mhz, with a limit, but you need lots of cooling power to OC the quad

E8400 is cheaper to overclock

You're going to get further with the 8400 on the stock cooler than you will with a quad. In the end, you'll end up with higher fps going with the dual in your situation. As far as futureproofing, a Q6600 will probably be too slow by the time you actually need a quad.

Im not into major overclocking. Hell im not even sure if this is going to run on my ****ty 450w power supply, i guess im gonna have to rip out some of these neons, unplug 3 of these useless cd rom drives, and all around try lose alot of un-needed power to run what im sticking in.

This should feel very nice doing this upgrade. I currently have a single core Athlon 4000+ with 1gb **** DDR ram, and a 7300GS video card that resets randomly.

I get like 50fps on Doom 3 demo with 640x400 res and ultra lowest settings possible haha.

Its also good because i see people get at least around 40fps in very high res with my new setup. My 17" can only handle 1280x960 which is fine for me, so if i can get at least 60fps + in most games on that res, with very high detail and dx9 + windows XP, im gonna be in love
