How to recover data?

Thread Starter
Hi, I guess this is not the right forum where to ask this question, but it is the best place I know of, with people who know a lot about computers?
I had a few problems on my computer recently and formatted and reinstalled win xp. Is there a way I can recover the data that I lost, how do I do it and can somebody point me to a forum that is specialized in that kind of issues?
tnx

If you formatted and installed windows on the same drive you're trying to recover data from, it's almost certainly lost.... especially on the part of the drive that now has the new O/S.

If you used another drive to install your O/S and you still have the first drive that had all the data, you can use hd recovery tools such as Ontrack Easy Recovery Professional.

It works great!

thanks for the quick reply...
I don't care that much about a little lost data, it is just that my hdd is full of data and I don't want to lose it all. I found out after a google search about a soft called PCInspector, I'm gonna try it out and let you all know.

IMHO

If your HDD is full of data you should be thinking of backuping, don't you?

I belive best backup strategy is external HDD + reliable backup software
(usually external HDD are sold with backup utility, but i don't find them reliable enough).
As external HDD - Maxtor, Seagate
Backup utility - Definetly Acronis.

That stuff will only work if you didn't do a FULL format of the drive. If you did a full format, that means that the entire partition (except the stuff at the beginning for the file tables and boot sector and what not) is written over with 0s. Without some special FBI type equipment you can't get any data back after that.

yea it all depends on the type of format. If you kept the file system intact then there should be a folder with "old windows" or something on your desktop after the install.

if it was a full format your SOL
