First time build

Thread Starter
I just graduated and for my present my parents are willing to finance my first computer build. I was told to put together a list of parts and then we would look at the price and they would OK it or we would work on some compromises. Because of our schedule we aren't going to order any parts until mid-late july, but I figured that I might as well start looking at parts.

This computer is going to be mostly for gaming and writing papers for class. I'm probably going to overclock it some, but not that much seeing as how it will be my first foray into OCing. So far this is what I have come up with.

MB: EVGA 750i FTW SLI (I have heard that this is a good SLI and overclocking board.)

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (cheaper than the E8500 and I heard that it is easy to OC. By the time I need to worry about quadcore i will upgrade to whatever new stuff is out.)

CPU Cooling: Tuniq Tower 120 (I have heard that I want either this or the TRUE. I don't know much about the TRUE so if anyone has any information about that I would appreciate it.

Case: Antec Twelve Hundred Black ATX Full Tower Computer Case

HDD: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB (Has plenty of space for me and I have heard that it's crazy fast.)

PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W

Memory: CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)

Sound Card: Trying to decide if I should worry about this. I'm not an audiophile, but I am sensitive enough to sound quality to hate ear buds. Are there any good gaming cards that you would recommend?

Optical Drive: ASUS Black 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA DVD-ROM Drive
ASUS Black DVD Burner with LightScribe

Keyboard: Saitek Eclipse II (From what I have heard this and the G15 are both great. Any feedback or opinions on any good gaming keyboards would be welcomed.)

Mouse: Logitech G5 (I like the design of it better than the G9)

OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 (64 bit of course)

Headset: Creative FATAL1TY 3.5mm gold-plated Circumaural Gaming Headset (I have heard that its better to get something like the HD555 and get a clip on mic. I may just suck at finding stuff online , but if anyone could point me in the direction of some good clip on mics that would be nice.

Edit: accidentally hit the enter button when I wasn't in the text box.

Scrap those

How much is your max budget?

This is my advice:

CPU: Q6600 for ~200USD
Mobo: DFI P35 Chipset: ~130USD
GPU: Nvidia 8800GTS G92 ~200USD
RAM: OCZ Reaper 2x2GB DDR2 800 ~60USD
HD: WD 640GB ~100USD
DVD: Samsung 20X w/Lightscribe SATA Driver ~30USD
Case: CM690 ~90USD
PSU: Corsair 750TX ~100USD

Total: ~1000USD

OS: 200USD
Monitor: 200USD
~40USD for a Xigmatek S1284 when it comes out.

Grand total of ~1500USD

FYI, the 750i CANNOT SLI to maximum potential since if you do SLI, both channels become x8, not x16, which is the way it should be.

Well I forgot to put the GPU. I am planning on getting 2 8800 gts G92, but I want to see what the benchmarks for the new cards that are going to be out in a few weeks are.

Don't have an exact budget, but probably somewhere around 2k-2.5k.

CPU: Q6600 for ~200USD
I'm thinking that I would be better off with a good dual cpu and worry about getting a quad when more software can use it.

Mobo: DFI P35 Chipset: ~130USD
Don't know much about mobos I just put the 750i up there because of what I have heard about it. I'll check this one out though.

GPU: Nvidia 8800GTS G92 ~200USD
Already plan to get two of these depending on how the GT200's turn out.

RAM: OCZ Reaper 2x2GB DDR2 800 ~60USD
I was under the impression that the 1066 is better than the 800. I could be mistaken since I don't know too much about RAM.

HD: WD 640GB ~100USD
Thats the plan.

DVD: Samsung 20X w/Lightscribe SATA Driver ~30USD
Does the drive matter too much. I thought that nowadays they were all mostly equal in quality as long as you bought it from a good name brand.

Case: CM690 ~90USD
I'm not familiar with this case. How big is it? I would prefer a full tower so that I have plenty of room for coolers and expansion. (GPU's just seem to keep getting bigger.)

PSU: Corsair 750TX ~100USD
I'm already planning on getting one of these.

sounds good.

I would change the:

Cooler to a Artic cooling freezer pro

Get a antec 900 and save a bit of cash, IMO there better looking

Change the HDD for the new Samsung 640gb F1, there 2x 333gb platers and litterely the fastest 7200rpm HDD availiable, there cheap and almost inaudible, WD hhd's make horrble noises.

Vista gives the X-fi some trouble with EAX5.0 so get the X-fi Extreme Audio, its the same card with the cystaliser and everything it just does not use EAX and is very cheap, also its uses a small PCB

Change the CD drive to one of Poineers BK drives or an Samsung drive, not only are they a few quid cheaper they are more reliable

Also get Vista home premium 64 instead of the ultimate edition, save some monies.

Do you really want to go down the SLI path? If so then go with the 750i FTW. If you would rather have a more stable system grab the recommended DK P35. If you want something new for the sake of it being new, wait til the end of the month for the DK P45.

I would advise you not to go with SLI if you are getting a monitor smaller than 24". You do benefit if you have a 22" mono but I just don't think it's worth it.

There are a lot of people here who have stable SLI boards with small monitors and all of them will tell you it's worth it. At the end of the day it comes down to what do you want more?

Oh yeah don't forget that you can't have a multi-monitor setup with SLI GPUs.

Best of luck
