Vista 64 not recognizing my external hard drive

Thread Starter
I just built a new desktop with Vista 64-bit, and I can't seem to get Vista to recognize my Western Digital Mybook Premium 320 gb. I connect it by USB, and then Vista sees that and tried to install a driver, but can't find any. WD doesn't seem to have any specific drivers for these drives on Vista, but shouldn't the damn OS be able to just recognize it as a USB storage device?

Sorry, it's just really annoying that something so simple could be made so difficult. By the way, the drive is fine - I've used it for over a year on my laptop (which has Windows XP)... so it's gotta be Vista. Has anyone encountered this problem, or can anyone suggest any kind of fix? I don't even need to use the WD software - I just want Vista to let me use it as a storage device.

Thanks!

Okay, maybe i can help you out here because i've got the exact same OS (Windows Vista Ultimate x64) and i also have the WD MyBook Premium.

I realize this seems stupid, but it doesn't hurt to make sure you have everything plugged in right (USB cables and power adapter).

You mentioned that Vista sees it and tries to install a driver. You do have the original software loaded right? The main thing is to make sure that it has the autorun folder with it's autorun windows batch file (.bat). I hope you still have your laptop, that way you can check.

It's also a good idea to make sure that USB support is turned on, and that you have no USB ports that are disabled (in case you did this manually because you don't use the port too much). I believe that WD MyBook Premium uses USB 2.0, but just in case i'm wrong, make sure you have USB Legacy support enabled in BIOS (in case it is off in your settings).

Oops, sorry about the bump that was too early - I'm still kinda new to the boards. Thanks for your help guys/girls, I'm gonna check the bios and then see about what else I might try... I'll keep you posted.

Funny thing, Vista does not recognize my external HD either. I have a WD SATAII that is in a enclosure. I can get it to recognize it on my XP machine no problem but cannot see it on my Vista laptop. Checked all the USB ports are working. Have turned on the computer with it plugged in. Very irritating. Also, the first time I plugged it in, Vista asked for a driver, which I let it search for but couldn't find. Same scenario as the original poster. I bet if I switched my laptop to XP, everything will work fine. Any suggestions?
