I really want AMD to cop itself on...They need to release a quad that is able to compete with the Q6600 clock for clock...

In multithreaded applications K10 keeps up clock for clock, it just doesn't in single threaded and doesn't clock well enough.

I am fairly certain the increased TDP is because AMD keeps needing to increase the voltages to reach higher clock speeds, as their architecture is quite limited in that regard, unfortunately. That is why overclocking the Phenom chips is not very fruitful in many cases.

Thats the CPUs power draw man, Intel wants you to believe that their cpu's power draw is lower, but what they don't tell you is that the total system power draws between AMD and Intel procs are nearly the same, because Intel's northbridge sucks up WAY more power than AMD's

Phenom X4 and even Athlon X2 can take on the Core 2s, not the best Core2 but they can compete. That is something that shouldn't be mistaken.

if so i'll believe you. i saw benchies where they were 60% of the c2q, so I naturally assumed that c2d was 60% of c2q and thus phenom doesn't beat c2d -- benchies at tomshardware google phenom vs. core

I'm not talking performance-per-clock if thats what you mean. But performance/price AMD can keep up pretty well considering.

they should just go back to the dual core solution, they're cheaper, give similar performance to the quads in fps on games.... why not make a Athlon X2 at 4.0GHz and 5.0GHz, they would really take a huge leap over anything intel has out right now..... not only that, if major companies want more cores, just make mobo chipsets that support 2 CPU slots....... come on, its cheap, probably easier, less power consumption, and faster performance... they don't even use the dual core solutions good enough :\\

a lot of people forget even clocking your q6600 to 3.6ghz+ raises your power usage a lot. The reason why Intel went with these "down clocked energy efficent CPUs" is cuz if they had a higher line that woops AMD w/ frequencies of 2.8ghz, 3ghz, 3.2ghz etc. intel will seen as the power hungry monster with hot CPUs like the Pentium D's. 45nm cpus let them bring out some more clock speed at the same TDP, thats probably why Intel never went pasted 2.66ghz on the 65nm parts. (Quad-core mainstream wise.)

Agree. This chip will probably be a horrible overclocker

Multi-core is the future. We can't have companies going backwards now can we? And you can't just make a chip run at 4ghz and 5ghz, it requires years of work just to make chips that run at their current speeds today. Additionally making a chip run that fast would demand insane amounts of power, much more troublesome then simply making a multi-core chip and making applications to utilize that.

At this point, it seems smarter to just sit and wait for the 45nm refresh than to get a sizzling 140W chip.
