[hardocp] Why Windows Live Mail is Better than Gmail - Page 7

i think user milage will vary.

For my account that I only use with people I know, ie family and friends, I never get spam.

It think it has less to do with the filters and more to do with how you use your email account. I have one that's strictly for signing-up to online sevices, registering products, downloading things, etc. and it's bombarded with spam.

I actually JUST switched to gmail yesterday, because Hotmail requires you to pay for POP access. LAME.

Anyway, Here's my hotmail account, THIS IS NOT FORGED:

I've had this email for probably 6 years.

I hate gmail and yahoo personally. I've always liked hotmail and used it as my personal email for the last 10+ years. The switch to live was no biggy and it didn't affect anything I did then opposed to now.

The gmail ads are unintruisve unlike hotmail

Besides, they only scan the content on the page. Not the actual email.

Hence when you go on the spam folder and empty it you get adverts for spam sandwich's etc

Gmail I can access anywhere easily, I'm not entrusting my email to M$, who could at any time pull some proprietary stuff out of their arse that won't be Linux-compatible (I mean, so could Google, in theory, but M$ are the only ones likely to do it).

He says gmail isn't as good because you loose functionality with a separate client, unless you use thunderbird with two plugins. Yeah, OK, but how is trusting everyone to have Windows Live Mail any better? Only if it runs Vista is that going to be so, surely you would be better of putting Thunderbird portable onto a USB stick?

Easy.

That's what I meant. That's why I now use my own domain(metala.org) to send/receive mail.

No IMAP support for Microsoft Windows Live Mail. You have to pay for it.

Google's Gmail and AOL's AIM Mail are FREE services that support IMAP.

one thing i HATE about hotmail, is that microsoft will not let you foward the email to other email accounts, or even set it up w/ windows mobile phones. I mean...i have a email client on my phone that will allow me to access email from any of the clients i have at a push of a button...EXCEPT mail that is under the MS brand umbrella. i've always found that a bit ridiculoust
