The Basics

hey guys,

You may have seen me drifting around this section the last few days I want to become an audiophile, I have recently discovered the beauty of lossless music, and can even notice the difference between ALAC and 320Kbps MP3

I'm the type, before I invest money in anything I have to spend 6 months researching it lol, so I might as well start now. Can anyone tell me whats a typical setup to play CD's, or digital audio, with an audiophile grade quality??

Could you point me towards some nice beginner speakers, or amplifier perhaps??

Any help will be appreciated

Chris

For starters you should consider a setup like this:

DAC (E-Mu 0404 USB, Zero, Zhaolu D2.5, Beresford TC-7510, etc, all fine entry level DACs)
Amp (Depending on your application you'll either want headphone amps or power amps)
Headphones or speakers (Headphones will give you better sound quality for your money, of course you don't get the volume of speakers)

A DAC converts the digital signal into an analog one, the amp amplifies that analog signal. =D

Got ya, but I noticed that most DAC's have headphone outputs, would u still need a headphone amp to use headphones??

The build-in headamp in most entry level DACs pale in comparison to a dedicated headamp. I can only speak for the Zhaolu because it is the only one I've owned, but I do like it a lot, and I'll like it even more when I get around to rolling the OPAMPs. The build-in headamp on the Zhaolu($225) is pretty refined, smooth, but lacking in both detail and soundstage compared to the VHP-2($399).
