Operating System Not Found??

Thread Starter
I just bought a little cheap laptop (Compaq Insperiao 1700) from ebay the other day. So it came in and had Win98 DOS installed. Okay, so I put Xubuntu on it. Well, I was trying to load up t he BIOS menu when my sister tripped over the cord. The laptop doesn't have a battery so it immediately shut off. Now when I turn it on all I get is a black screen with the words "Operating System Not Found"

Reboot does nothing.
Live CDs don't work.
Windows install CDs do nothing.
I searched Google and saw that this is apparently a problem with this laptop. Apparently I need to flash the BIOS with the upgrade available from there site. Is this the best solution or should I try something else first? I know that flashing a BIOS can be dangerous.

You could try resetting the the BIOS. Remove the the power cord and the BIOS battery. there may be a junper you have to change too, it should be covered in the owners manual. Wait 10 minutes or so, reinstall the battery (reset the jumper, if changed), and see if it powers up.

If that's a no go, then follow the owner's manual instructions for reflashing the BIOS. But, since it won't post at all, that may not be possible. It may have to go to a repair shop for a new BIOS chip to be installed. Some are hard wired in place. It that's the case, the laptop's pretty much a gonner. If you're handy (and laptops can be extremely difficult to work on) you could order a mew BIOS chip and install it yourself.

Thanks for replying. I can't believe I didn't think about resetting the BIOS myself...
