Western Digital has just introduced the My Book Studio Edition II into its extensive family of portable HDDs, and it's certainly one very serious piece of kit.

The My Book Studio Edition II offers a whopping 2 TB of storage space with the two 3.5" 1 TB GreenPower series HDDs which can either be striped in RAID 0 or set up for a RAID 1 (Mirrored) config. The unit can be connected by means of FireWire 400/800, eSATA and of course USB 2.0.

Western Digital offer the 2 TB monster at an RRP of $699AUD with a 5-year warranty. For full details, grab the official PR here folks.

Sydney Australia. –June 2 2008 – WD today introduced its My Book® Studio Edition™ II high-performance dual-drive storage systems which are designed to seamlessly work with Mac® computers and provide an ideal blend of power savings and high performance. Available now at select retailers the new My Book Studio Edition II dual-drive storage systems are available in capacities of 1 TB and 2 TB.

The new eco-friendly dual-drive My Book Studio Edition II external storage systems use WD’s GreenPower™ hard drives for power savings and cool and quiet operation. The system’s dual-drive, RAID 0 configuration and high-speed interfaces deliver high performance for creative professionals, workgroups, small offices and anyone looking for fast data transfer.

i highly doubt it... I alone have more that 2tb worth of "media"

I still don't understand why these types of external hdds cost so damn much. i can buy 2 1tb hdds for well under $400. Tacking on $200 extra for an enclosure, that supports RAID doesn't seem reasonable to me. I would rather build a media PC for a little more with the support for more hdds over this solution...

But for the simple fact that this whole setup is plug and play, right off the shelf, probably with little effort needed to setup whatever raid solution, im sure there is a market for this. Just not my cup of tea...

2TB WD external drives have been out for almost a year. The only thing new about this 2TB drive is the eSATA feature.

@ OpTicaL: AND the built-in RAID controller.

@ JoBlo69: Depends on what kind of RAID controller is in that thing. If it is a pretty good one, it could easily cost $100 on its own...
