Windows Help/Possible Virus

Thread Starter
Ok, so after a long weekend of numerous reformats and new installations, I am completely at a loss. See sig for my computer. so here is what happened:

About 2 weeks ago, everything on my computer ran flawless (everything has been installed since the end of Jan, when I bought all the new parts and installed everything). But 2 weeks ago, I noticed that when I turned on my computer, it would have terrible lag and take forever to finish starting up, compared to before. Just to open "My documents" now would take several seconds instead of instantaneously opening like before. Surfing the internet on my computer is too much to bare, it reminds me of days of old when we used 28.8 modems, it just drags and takes forever. So I figured somehow I caught something, as my roommates also use my computer and I don't monitor their activities. So I ran a virus and spyware scan, Kaspersky and Spyware Doctor, respectively, and found nothing?!? So I tried checking out the control panel to see if anything there could be tweaked but nothing worked, as Rundll32.exe is now missing from my system. Fortunately I have 2 HDD, my C drive to install everything and my D drive which i download everything to, so if I have to format my C drive I just have to re-install everything w/o losing anything important. So I did that, I formatted my C drive, complete format, not quick, and re-installed windows xp home 32bit. It started up very quickly and was fully loaded ready to go in a couple seconds, like the good old days. I reinstalled my Nvidia drivers and restarted and my computer is still working great. I have a downloaded copy from MS of SP3, I install that and it boots up great again.

I should mention here that my computer is unplugged from my router until I get spyware doctor and kaspersky installed and running, which is my next step. So i install SD and K and then restart my computer attaching the ethernet cable so I can do updates on Windows, SD and K. Here is where I get hit again, by what ever it is that is dragging me down. By the time I do the updates for K, SD and Windows, and restart my computer, I am back in the same boat as before. Just to give an example of my bog down, it took about 10 minutes to install Firefox RC1, several minutes to extract and several to install. Before I had this issue, FF would install in less than a minute and already be surfing the net.

I have run full scans using SD and K and found nothing, before i started my first format and each time i formatted which I did twice over the weekend. Both SD and K were fully updated prior to full scans also.

So this is where i am at, i have a computer at the house with a fresh install of Windows and only SD and K plus the nvidia drivers and SP3 also installed. yet, when i turn on my computer and just try to surf the net or look through my documents, it feels as if I am converting video at full HD in the background, as my computer is completely sluggish. I am at a loss of what to do.

Please please please, even if it is a long shot, through me a bone of advice or something to try. I am out of ideas and have a sweet setup at the house that feels like its my original Athlon XP system. I cannot take this anymore.

I should also note that i have a small OC for my system, which is exactly the same as it was prior to this issue happening. Default for my proc is 333x9, I have it set at 400x9 at 1.225 volts, which was orthos tested for 8 hours flawlessly, again, prior to this unkown issue happening. Thanks for any help.

task manager is a good idea. PSU is less likely just because if that was going i think it would effect everything although you could def check vcore etc using everest or something like that. see how much it drops when under load

It might also be a possibility that there is a viral infection on your second hard drive. Also check to make sure both drive controllers are set to UDMA and not PIO mode.

Is it a software issue or hardware>?

Ensure everything is seated properly (cpu, ram, psu)

Try running safe-mode (F8 key).

Try booting with 1 stick of ram.

Try booting from another device besides your hdd.

Get back with your results after trying this.

The only piece of my hardware that is older than Jan 2008 is the case itself, everything else, including speakers, monitor, mouse and keyboard were all purchased at the end of Jan 2008. I ran a disk check using tuneup Utilities for XP on my C and D drive and it found no errors.

I wouldn't know what to look for anyway, typically i see lots of svchost.exe and other filenames but i have no clue what these do. I am more hardware then software. What should i keep an eye out for and what would be too much memory usage? Thanks for the reply!!!

typically pay attention to the process that uses alot of cpu and ram.....check this place out if you're not sure....http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/?files=
