ATI or nVidia - Page 2

i agree with everyone else, first you will see a HUGE difference from 8600 to 8800. I went from an 8600 to 8800gt and jumped from 2200 in 3d mark to 12000. (This was on my backup HP M9040n rig, not sig rig). I would wait until the new cards come out in 10-15 days. Or, wait until then and I am sure you will see a flood of 8800's being sold here (so people can upgrade, that is what i am doing.)

Ah. Yes, that will make a huge difference--then I'd suggest looking at the 9800 series of cards from Nvidia, or the upcoming 4xxx series cards from ATI. And depending on the game, you might want to consider a multi-card setup to get the full performance when gaming at 1080p...

To be honest, the only games that would go on that are Test Drive Unlimited and Guitar Hero 3.

hmmm id have to say an 8800 would be fine, my preference is evga ive had 3 awesome cards from them in a row now, my first trip to nvidia was with an xfx 6600 and the cooling fan burnt off it in 4 mths, switched to evga and have never looked back. as for using it to stream to a 42 inch 1080p i do it now with my current build and it looks just as good if not better then my 360

This thread has been going for two pages without any heat, I think this is going to be a pretty respectful thread. But thanks for trying to initiate a fight.

To be honest I was expecting a lot more heat too.

its a matter of preference for some experience for others, i personally hate ati as when i first got into comps i went threw 3 ati cards in a year, then gave up with them and switched to nvidia and i havent looked back. Nowadays though you have nvidia/ati and then the huge bunch of manufactures that put out versions of there card. I personally go by brand and evga has always been rock solid for me, if evga came out with an ati card i could see myself giving it a try, but until that time im nvidia sold, and i have converted many of my friends to them and they have all been peachy keen since the switch.

It's pretty much like a lion vs. a mouse. 8800GTS wouldn't even bother picking the bones, it'd eat it whole.

But seriously, get an 8800GTS 512 at the moment unless you can hold out a month.

I would hang about for another few months and see what the next generation cards will bring. On the other hand, you could just pick yourself up a 8800GT or 8800GTS 512MB.
