VisionTek ATI Radeon HD3870 OC 512MB GDDR4 - SHould I buy?

Thread Starter
Hey everyone,

So the VisionTek ATI Radeon HD3870 OC 512MB GDDR4 is at bestbuy for 129 + a 10% coupon.

Should I get this card?

I got the EVGA 8800 GS two months ago for $130 for my Dell whatever. my 3dmark score is about 10K.

Would this card be worth it? I have 350W PSU, I know it says 450W but the 8800 GS seems to do OK witht the current supply.

Thanks or any help.

I would say what you have is fine. With a single 3870, I get about mid 10,000. There isnt any point in you getting one IMO.

I posted this on the Best Buy Deal post:

So a couple of things.

1 - I had to use both bridges to get crossfire to work on my Blitz Formula, otherwise the VGA Bios would fail. I thought I could use just one, but oh well.

2 - They are quiet, I have the standard ones not the zerotherm, at least I think I do.

3 - I had a 9600GT installed before this. Here are my numbers for 3DMark06 standard settings at stock settings on the video cards:

BFG 9600GTOC - 11597
1 3870 - 12263 - already an improvement
Crossfire setup - 18261 Holy Mother!!!!!!

This is at 1280x1064. My computer specs are:
Q6600 @ 3.6 400x9
GSkill 4Gb Ram (2x2Gb) 961Mhz

Hope that helps

Yeah, I found you need both bridges for sure (one card came without one). It is worth it to crossfire these cards. I have a 3Dmark06 score of 19629 with the following breakdown:

3DMark Score....19626
SM 2.0 Score....7891
SM 3.0 Score....8982
CPU Score........5633

Crossfire with 2 cards is great, but again for a single card, stick with what you have.

I would go with the 3870 if you want improvement, the PSU may be pushing it but with what he showed up that the 3870>9600>8800GS....

Yea im pissed my computer wont support crossfire/SLI so if the 3870 does offer me a decent upgrade for 130 I'd still get it, the real question is how much improvement will I see.

Guess i could always buy it then return it.

Nice vuxdu, thats the machine I got, do you have the stock PSU in there? If you got that much performance I
'll get it, 20% is worth it to me for 130. I can always see my EVGA card.

I say get it

It'll be an improvement (Especially at higher resolutions where the 256-bit bus and 512mb of the 3870 kicks the 192-bit 384mb 8800GS' butt)
