Helping a friend - $1000 budget

I need a bit of help picking parts for my friend's computer. He wants it to be capable of a fair amount of gaming and running multiple programs at once. His budget is $1000 after taxes (7.25%) and shipping (estimated at $100) and before rebates. Right now, I'm about $92 over and I still need a sound card. No need for a monitor, mouse, keyboard, or speakers. Speakers would be nice, but not necessary.

Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 - $131.99
ASUS P5N-E SLI LGA 775 - $119.99
PNY VCG96512GXPB - $144.99
G-SKILL F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQ - $89.99
Seagate Barracuda ES.2 ST3250310NS - $79.99
COOLER MASTER Mystique RC-632S-KKN1-GP$74.99
CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX - $94.99
ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro- $26.99
Samsung SH-203B DVD Burner - $29.99
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit - $109.99

He picked the case so that one isn't changing. Any ideas on where I can chip it down to $1000?

If it's all from Newegg, shipping isn't cost $100. Dump the whole list in your basked and let Newegg calculate the shipping costs. Probably around $40. Also, in which state are you that you have to pay tax on Newegg purchases?

To my address (Washington State), shipping is $39.47 and no tax.

Check it... you might be closer to $1,000 than you think.

If your friend doesn't plan on OC'ing you can drop the ARCTIC Cooling Freezer Pro since the E7200 you are buying is retail and it already has a Heatsink. If you don't mind changing the case you can currently get an Antec 900 at newegg for about 64.99 after the rebate and the Promo code for free shipping. Just my 2 cent.

We're in California.

Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 - $131.99
ASUS P5N-E SLI LGA 775 - $119.99
G-SKILL F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQ - $84.99
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500AAKS 250GB - $59.99
PNY VCG96512GXPB GeForce 9600 GT 512MB - $144.99
COOLER MASTER Mystique RC-632S-KKN1-GP - $74.99
CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX - $99.99
ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro - $26.99
Samsung SH-203B DVD Burner - $26.99
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit - $99.99

Subtotal: $870.90

Taxes: $63.14
Shipping: $36.76

Total: $970.80

The only part that was changed is the hard drive. There's roughly $20 left. Should I go back to the previous hard drive I picked out, get a sound card or a slightly better video card? I'm leaning towards the sound card, though his speakers blow anyway.

at 20$, you wont get a sound card much better then onboard.
i'd say put those 20$ and change your PNY 8800GT to a EVGA,
better warranty and if your friend wants to upgrade in the future [90 days],
he can use EVGA's step up program :]. cause Hard drives can always
be ghosted to new bigger hard drives.

I have some experience with the P5N-E SLI and unfortunately I can't say it was fun. In that price point, there are far better choices. I built a rig for a friend and he already had that motherboard. At stock clocks and voltages, the northbrige heatsink (which I should mention seems like it's attached with hopes and dreams) ran almost hot to the touch. Also, DIMM slots 2 and 4 didn't seem to work with two Corsiar 1GB sticks. I found others with DIMM slot problems when troubleshooting. Swapped to slots 1 and 3 and everything worked fine. Remember too that in SLi-mode, both slots are only running at x8. I'm not sure how much of an affect this would have on performance since the PCIe bus has quite a bit of bandwidth in x16 so someone else will have to confirm that.

I suggest something like:

Gigabyte DS3L $89.99

Take the $20 difference and put it toward an upgrade to the E8400 if you can.
