Whats the best Chipset/motherboards for crossfire?

post #1 of 13
Thread Starter
Hello I will soon be upgrading my pc and my old x800 pro for something new withing the upcoming weeks. I would like some help/information on what is the best and most stable chipset for crossfire only ? I heard x48 was good but how will the p45 or p35 boards do with it?

I am the type of person who doesn't like to upgrade a whole lot and like to get latest technology and parts to last me for a lifetime even if i have to shell out a little bit more $.

what is the best chipset and boards i should be looking for if i am only going to use ati and hopefully crossfire int he future?

Any information is greatly appreciated.

X38 and X48 will be the best choices, since they do x16, x16 in Crossfire mode. P35 and P45 boards do support Crossfire (provided hey have dual PCI- E x16 slots), but not at x16, x16.

I am the same way. I payed a few more dollars to get a nice xfire board and other parts as I do not like updated but every few years.
I went ahead with the x38, maximus formula. It was my first build and first Overclock and it all went smooth without any hiccups. I have not had any problems with it and the xfire is x16, x16 in both slots as opposed to p35 which only one slot is x16 the other is (i believe) x4.
Anyways, here is the newegg link to check it out.

Also, a member is selling a new fresh from RMA one for ~$50 cheaper.

Good luck with whatever you choose though!

I have the P5E3 deluxe X38, great board but I don't plan on CFing it any time soon. But everyone I have talked to who has the chipset says Crossfire on it works great. Also 2x HD3870x2 is possible also.

what benefits does flashing to the rampage bios give you?

EDIT: i was about to post a similar thread, srry for jacking but are AMD chipsets the only ones with more than 2 PCIe Slots for CF-x?

More overclocking options mainly - and more range in voltage options [higher maximum settings]

To complicate this further:
x38= 16x16 crossfire - PCI-E 2.0
x48= 16x16 crossfire- PCI-E 2.0
p35= 16x4 (Blitz formula was 8x8) - PCI-E 1.1
P45= 8x8 - PCI-E 2.0
