highest format for computers? wav. people will say FLAC since its the most uinversally used, but WAV is CD quality. FLAC is easier to tag, and so forth.

play it in : foobar [need to install compnents
winamp [codec needed]
VLC
J. River Media Jukebox [easiest to use by far]

how to get it? rip it using Exact Audio Copy [link]
btw, people are going to tell you there are better audio formats, there are, but you cant get them from ripping a cd, you'd need the actual studio recordings.

most practical? ALAC, as it can be played/ripped using itunes, and be played on ipods without modifications to software.
favorite by audiophiles? FLAC, you need special codecs to have playback, but has a higher bit rate then ALAC most of the time. downside, if you have an MP3 player, only a few and far between support FLAC [cowon's] and if you have an iPod, you need to rockbox it to support FLAC

WAV (wave)

44100 kHz/16bit stereo = native CD quality, but you can go higher if your source is better than that (as high as your sound card supports).

Just a warning though - each song recorded can take up 50MB or more of space.

Well the highest quality should be anything thats lossless right? iTunes has AAC lossless I belive. You would need audio CD's to rip from (no digital file's). Then just play with iTunes.

No, wav has less compression then FLAC, but :

Quote:
First, WAV and AIFF are almost exactly the same thing. They are both containers for RAW PCM audio. The only difference is that WAV originally was a Microsoft / IBM standard and AIFF originaly was an Apple standard. They both will preserve the resolution of the CD PCM audio perfectly and untouched. The downside is that the size of the files will be exactly the same as it was on the CD and thus very large (about 10MB per minute of CD audio).

FLAC and Apple Lossless are a little different. As lossless codecs, they still preserve the PCM perfectly, but they also use compression algorithims that, while still preserving perfect fedelity of the audio, will cut the file sizes down 30% to 60% depending on the audio, codec, and compression levels. These files can also be decoded to re-produce the original WAV or AIFF file again. Use these if you want to conserve a little space.

FLAC is the way to go.
foobar2000 should play your FLAC files fine.
FLAC is like 1,000 kbps most of the time, and it sounds darn near perfect through Foobar2000 and a decent sound card.
