Quick question on oem thermal paste

Thread Starter
Getting ready to put a new box together and wondering if anyone knows what type of paste would be on a Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 from the factory? I picked it up used and it has a darkish primer grey looking paste on the cpu and nForce4. The cpu looked more like paste but the nforce4 heat sink seems to be like a tape or something by the way it was applied.

Anyone know if this is oem?

Since i've already removed these parts it looks like stars-420 is going back on it since that's all i have atm. Just wondering if i shoulda left it alone.

Well, the cpu thermal paste sounded like some as5 or something, as its about that color. As for the nforce chipset, maybe it was dried up as5 or (most likely) a thermal adhesive, which is complete trash but commonly used by manufacturers. The cpu was better off with keeping what you had on there, just respreading it nicely to eliminate the lumpy surface from removal, and for the nforce, well, unless your current paste is really crappy anything would be better than a pad.

I dont know anything bout 'stars-420' so...

The stars is probably generic zinc oxide.

I've never seen Arctic Silver applied as an OEM paste. The most common grey material OEMs tend to apply is typically Shin-Etsu. I know AMD uses this as the OEM material on it's stock heatsinks. I'm not sure what MSI uses for their chipsets.

The stock Shin-Etsu, if that's what is was, is likely better than the Stars (which is still pretty good as far as white pastes go).

i'd go with a generic version of as5.
and amd black thermal sticker = avoid.

i got some generic 'grey stuff' that came with my cpu HSF. called 'silver Tim'. its basicially just a knock off by-product. but it works all the same.

Thanks

Seems to be working ok as easytune5 is showing my cpu temp as 31°C/87°F after 2 days running. It doesn't show the chip set temp so not sure what that is.

Looks like the ingredients are
Silicone compound:50%
Carbon compound:20%
Metal oxidecompound:30%
Thermal conductivity:<0.06

Have to grab some arctic silver 5 next time i order somthing since i'm about out of the stars anyway.
