Q9450 vs Q6700

Thread Starter
I'm looking to overclock my new build. I'll be running a 790i Ultra with water cooling. Which would preform better? I have heard some people had a hard time with the q9450, but I have also seen a few with stable 3.8 water cooled. So i'm wondering which would be smarter to get? I would also like to know whats the highest people have OC'd the q9450 and q6700 and still kept it stable.

Agreed, th Q9450 is limited in its top end overclocks.

The Q6700 is a heck of a bargain.

Q6700 is the best price/performance chip right now in terms of Quad Cores. 45nm Quads are not worth it unless you go QX9650. Although there is a Q9650 coming that is to cost what the Q9550 does now. Rumoured to be a Q3 launch and have a x9 multi, this could be the chip that brings 45nm Quads to the mainstream.

i thought q6600 was best price/performance ratio. arent people getting similar clocks on both q6600 and q6700?

Not anymore. the Q6700 has the advantage of a 10x multi which means you can run a lower FSB (which typically means less heat and or vcore).

The recent Q6600's have been real SLACR overclockers, while the Q6700's have been great overclockers.

I just bought a Q6600 about a month ago an i has a VID of 1.2250 - and it overclocks well...

That said, if you can get a cheap Q6700, it will be a great chip to overclock

When it comes to the 9450 it's all about the board, if your board can handle over 500 FSB then OC'ing that chip is a breeze - my validation in my sig is my highest overclock to date. That can be done on air cooling, I just like the shiney colors of watercooling
