(Looking at your rig, 4GB of RAM can also be a problem for these boards, it seems, particularly if it's 4X1GB sticks. If that's your set-up, you might want to try raising your FSB with only 2 sticks (2 GB). You may be able to put the other two GBs of RAM back in later, by raising NB volts, but let's get your FSB/clock speed up first.)
i'm actually all on auto, but being on auto and stable at 2.69ghz [prime95 12+ hours], i think i should also be stable at 2.7ghz. a buddy of mine and i have the exact same setup and he can auto to 3.2ghz easily. we swapped cpus, memory, and psu and i still run into the same problem. i think it's my mobo. i don't qualify for evga's step-up program.

...is it time for a new setup?

i can't get to the desktop at 2.7ghz, but with 2.69ghz, it's stable.

.......

but now i'm at the desktop with 3.0ghz!!! apparently, not even the stock clock of my corsair xms2-800 [1gbx4] worked well with cpu overclocking. i gotta dump these guys and pick up something else. any suggestions? i wanted to get some good 1066[or better] 1gbx4 or 2gbx2 that overclock like pie. thanks ocn.

Whatever you get, you probably want to go with 2 sticks (2x2gb). This G.SKILL is pretty popular:
