Think PSU just bit the dust, 3 weeks out of warrenty

Not 10 minutes ago I reached down to turn my server on and nothing happened. So I unplugged it and replugged it in... nothing. I then flipped the switch on the back (the real power switch) and flipped it back on, the lights lit up for half a second then turned off again. I unplugged it now cause I thought I smelled smoke and decided one last try was in order. It turns on, but the fans spin at half speed, the lights turn on and one of the fans pulses the same time a loud clicking sound happens. Nothing else appears to turn on.

So I can assume its dead right? Oh and heres the kicker I bought it 5/14/2006 or in other words 3 weeks to the day out of warranty (warranty is 24 months). Its a Sunbeam NUUO 540 watt, think Sunbeam would honor it considering its so close or am I just going to never have to buy a Sunbeam product again? Keep in mind this was in a very, very sparsely used server powering components well under its max capacity. I don't want to buy from a manufacture if its just going to die right outside their warranty period.

Sounds dead to me.

That Sunbeam isn't a bad PSU. It is an older Andyson made PSU so efficiency isn't the best but otherwise it performs well as reviewed: http://jonnyguru.com/modules.php?nam...p=Story&reid=9. It does have the dreaded Fuhjyyu caps which may have failed, it does happen when things get a bit warm. It's hard to say though. I doubt Sunbeam will accept the RMA since it is out of warranty. 2 years isn't a great warranty, 3 years is about as low as I would go. Something like this Antec would be a good replacement with good efficiency and it's ridiculously cheap with the MIR.

Yeah I was just really pissed last night when I posted that I bought it 2 years ago on the recommendation from this forum on how solid a PSU it was. Oh well, I wanted a new one anyway, with 2 fans it was never the most quiet thing.

Thanks for posting that link. I was scouring newegg and passed that PSU up because I missed the mention of the rebate. I'll be ordering it tonight, the 80% efficiency is a big deal to me. I'm not a greenie, but I still like to do what I can.

Try this - hold the power button in and unplug and replug in the power supply, or flip on and off the switch in the back. Sometimes you can get the machine to boot like that.

Go with BFG mate. They have a life time warranty on their cards and PSU. Mine died in may when it was purchased back in november. I told them what i tried to do to fix it, they said just send it in. According to the tracking site, the same day they got it is the same day they sent out a new one. So I only had to wait about 5 days to get another one.
