[vr-zone] did NVIDIA "break" DX10.1 in AC?! - Page 5

I've been using nVidia since the GeForce 3 days, but recently decided to switch to ATI for my new build. Stories like this one, and similar questionable things I've seen come out of nVidia in the last year or so, make me feel more confortable with that choice.

I think it's sad that the developers are entering into these hardware marketing arrangements in the first place. I understand why they do it...games are expensive to create, and the extra cash from nVidia helps get the game made. But can anyone really claim to be surprised when the developer succumbs to pressure to ensure that the game looks better, or at least no worse, than on the competing card? This is the scummy side of capitalism, I'm afraid.

If there were no sinister motives behind these actions then I'll be as surprised as anyone.
What I don't understand is: When DirectX was first invented, one of the core tenets of the library was that it would query the hardware to see what features your machine could support, then use those features. Has that changed? If not, then DirectX 10.0 should be fully enabled and supported in any game coded for 10.1. If you're using a 10.1 enabled card from ATI, you get the 10.1 features; if you're using a 10.0 card from nVidia, the game would know that and only execute 10.0 calls. Unless this basic principle of DirectX has changed, then there is no excuse for ever removing support for a higher level of DirectX.

Take a stock 3870 and play Assassin's Creed all maxed any resolution you want and then tell me who you are siding with.

Thats how Assassin's Creed works, and i would assume every other game with DX10.1.

Exactly. DirectX 10.1 implements many of the things which Microsoft initially had planned for DirectX 10, but dropped because nvidia didn't support them (too expensive in silicon). nvidia does not support DirectX10, but really DirectX9.9 (which I just made up).

nvidia will not support 10.1 for another year (or two years after ATI).

ATI's proper support for directX10 cost them a lot of money and performance against nvidia who used their leverage to have things "The way we want them played".

Oh so now just because I have an ATI card in my sig rig I'm a fan boy , I swtched from Nvidia and have no regrets, actually I don't even like Nvidia if you get technical I loved 3Dfx but their time had to end and Nvidia's had to begin, so no I have never liked Nvidia and never will.

I'll always buy what's best for my rig and my pocket though

Who cares if it takes two of ATi's cards to make the power of one of Nvidia's, especially when you can get 2 of them cheaper then one of Nvidia's cards

Nvidia is a slacker in my book now, first they shrug off actual DX10 compliance and force MS to change the rules for them. Now they are trying to dictate the market and prevent advances that could be crucial for some.

It's really depressing thinking about the fact that I'm going to have to choose between AMD/ATI and nvidia based not on performance, but by company ethics. If this is true, along with all the other crap that nvidia has been saying and doing lately, I'll vote AMD with my money. I've never actually had an AMD CPU or an ATI GPU, but there's always time for a first. I'm planning on finally replacing my old computer (not sig pc - that's not for me personally) this winter and I feel like I should go with AMD over nvidia and Intel just because the two companies are playing dirty. Monopolies suck.
