9800GTX SLi and 60 degrees C

Thread Starter
I have two EVGA 9800GTX SC cards in SLi, and I have noticed recently that when overclocked the cards begin to crap out at around 60 degrees. However When returned to stock settings the cards will happliy go all the way up to 70 degrees and still be running fine.

Is this a voltage issue, or is there somthing wrong with my cards. I have been using Rivatuner with its OSD to monitor temps while in games.

LOL, you need better cooling.

Something like the Thermalright HR-03 GT would be awesome.

I was looking at them, but they're to overpriced and I cannot fit two in my case. But why are they craping out at 60 degrees when oc'd and when at stock will go higher?

The nVidia cooler was designed to just operate at the stock clocks. It is rare to find a reference cooler that is fantastic.

[No idea for the random temp differences. It might be that you ran them at stock after torturing them with higher clocks.]

60C is normal for an overclocked 9800GTX on a stock cooler. I remember when I first had changed the cooler on my card, it would also crap out at 60C in any of my games with a screen full of artifacts, but also I HATED that if you had manually set the fan at 100%, and once the card reached 60C it would automatically change back to default/auto. Also after a couple weeks of breaking in my card, I'm still tuning my card and so far, it's been +2hours stable at 870core./2075shad./1235mem all at 53C load with no vmodding.

I'm sorry but the 9800GTX stock cooler runs just fine, no need for aftermarket.

Just open up rivatuner, and set the desired fan speed.

For my cards in SLI I was able to hit 800/2000/2300 or so, and set the fan speed for 100% (it's the least loudest in my case) and I had temps at around 43C idle and mid to high 50's load.

You don't need an aftermarket cooler. The stock one is simply amazing. Just my two cents. You should at the very least be able to hit SSC clocks (770/1944/2300) reliably.

Thawny

And 60C is not high for these cards whatsoever, though mine never exceed 60c, and is often times much lower than that on full load.

I was thinking about getting a pair Accelero Xtreme 9800's when they come out. What changed with your cards, why did they stop crapping out at 60c? I've got the drivers(175.16) which fix the fan speed mod so that shouldn't be an issue.

EDIT: thawny Why are they crapping out then at 60c if its not high, I can run SSC clocks easily and in 3dmark the temps are low and I can go as high as 831/2000/2500, its just in games.

jesus christ, if that card at 100% isn't loud at all to you then wow. Do you have like Scythe Ultra kazi's as your case fans?!

Well long story short, it was when I first got my 9800GTX, and I could NOT stand how loud it was at 100% and the heating issues, so I went ahead and used my old Zalman VF-1000, along with custom heaksinks I made that work great.

lol, just standard scythe kaze's rated for 28dba at maybe 70cfm.

Honestly it's not that loud, I don't mind it. You can even keep it at 90% or 80% and it's not even half as bad. If I can get 43c idle and mid to high 50's load with stock cooler, I'd say that's impressive, but there's no reason why starbuck can't either.

Like I said, you should* typically be able to hit SSC clocks no problem

edit: and DK, what are you using to stress test your 9800GTX? ATi Tool? I'd say you'll need to be more vigorous than that... ie Crysis. If you can run crysis fine at those clocks for a couple hours, watching temps with say nTune, you're fine.

I never thought you would hit those clocks with a 9800GTX without a volt-mod at the very least.

Well, my cards idle at 35 and 39 degrees and in 3mark06 peak at 45 and 50 degrees. I run the fans at 100% and to be honest I don't mind the noise, when I'm watching a movie/listening to music/gaming I can't here them anyway.
